The restaurant is more spacious than I would have thought. We had a large party and were sat by the entrance which got cold when people forgot to close the door. With that being said, it did not hinder our dining experience. The food was magnificent and the cocktails were superb. Presentation was top! The space is beautiful inside and had kind of a sexy vibe. The servers were extremely attentive and we all left satisfied. Our cups and our bellies were full. Great place!

I regard it as a good sign when a restaurant is packed and W-Tao was very busy the night we dined there. We called ahead and the hostess squeezed us in, but there was otherwise not an empty seat in the place. Our waitress was prompt in taking our order and the food came out quickly. It looked better than the photos and tasted fresh too — no leftovers for us. It was great and right up there with other higher quality sushi restaurants we have visited recently.

I think everyone who eats sushi is probably looking for something a bit different. For myself this is the best sushi I’ve had since I moved to Iowa 15 years ago. The atmosphere is somewhat dark and quiet, which I find pleasant. The service is friendly and sometimes surprisingly fast. At the end of the day it’s all about the sushi. My experience here is always top notch. Very fresh. Overall I highly recommend this as your next sushi destination.

Stopped for lunch when driving through Des Moines. Sushi was great but the spicy edamame was what I would come back for.

I was a bit surprised to find such a fantastic sushi restaurant right in the middle of the country, but here it is! I ordered an avocado salad and sashimi dinner. Both were delicious. Nice-sized portions, too. My server was attentive, and the atmosphere was “chill,” as a previous reviewer said.

Delicious roll flavors! The combos of fish and sauces were just stunning and not like any I’ve tried before. Our son loved the gyoza. Staff was so friendly and helpful, gave recommendations right in line with our tastes, and took care of us all night. Definitely worth a visit in Des Moines.

Do yourself a favor and go when they’re not too busy and ask for an Omakase/Chef’s Choice experience. Let the chef know your budget and be prepared to be wowed! Check out images from my recent birthday celebration. Continue keeping up the great work, Tony, Ling and staff at W-Tao!

Subpar taste at an expensive price the only saving grace was the spicy edamame.
