Starting out as a food incubator for local makers out of Ivy City, Union Kitchen now runs six small grocery stores across the area. The Eckington location is the newest one, which opened on October 19, 2021. Here’s what you should know:

My partner and I are regulars at Union Kitchen. We enjoyed the fact that you could earn points with each purchase to buy different food and drink. However, they recently pushed the thresholds to an extreme. Earlier this year, it was around 200 points (equivalent to $200 spent at the store) for a breakfast sandwich. Now it’s 300 points. Considering it’s basically the only store in this immediate area, this seems pretty cheap of them.

This is one of my favorite spots in the city to grab lunch! Their sammies and blind dog cookie are fire. Open, airy, vibey space with tons of great food for literally whatever you’re craving, and the nicest staff. They make fresh food, but also sell groceries made by locals! Everything I’ve tried has been amazing, plus knowing it’s from a small business in the area makes me feel great about buying a bunch of snacks. 🙂 one of my favs is Berg Bites!

The sandwich was good and so was the customer service, but $15 for a small sandwich is just crazy

The staff is great, but the owners have been engaging in anti-union activities. Respect the rights of your workers! This is what the staff want and voted for -and given how many staff were treated, I can see why.

I was very impressed with the passion with which the protesters outside articulated their grievances. Given the large percent profit share Union Market gets from the businesses it promotes and the ridiculously high prices it charges customers, it is especially unfortunate that the owners would act so callous – and illegally- towards its employees in withholding tips and pay and firing those who speak out. The workers voted for a union, respect that.

Stopped by on a Friday for lunch. Not very busy and easy to find a table. My husband got the meatball sandwich and I got the buffalo chicken sandwich with gluten free bread. Both were really good. Chips are extra. They have a cute little market with wine beer and snacks. Dogs were allowed inside. We’ll come back again for coffee breakfast sandwiches.

Only main food place in the area, so by default it is the best. It actually does the job of having some to go food as well as some small meal prep stuff. It is a convenience store so it excels in that department. Hope the area receives a restaurant or something else food related and not just more wine.

Asked for bacon extra crispy and got back rubber – bread was stale – staff took approximately 45 minutes to make my BLT with just 3 order ahead of me in my group. Wouldn’t recommend this store, but I have some shred of faith in the chain.

The workers at this Union Kitchen are very nice, but my $6 large nitro cold brew was not good at all, which is disappointing because of the price, and because I used to be a barista at Compass Coffee, so I know how Compass Coffee and beans are supposed to taste. If you’re looking for good coffee, I’d recommend going one block down to Qualia instead. It’s much better.
