The sushi is passable, but pretty disappointing given the fairly high price. The eel was cold (maybe because service was slow) and octopus and squid was too firm. It’s in a nice area, Newbury St, but next time I’m around I’ll probably commute elsewhere to get better sushi.

Nice little environment. Service was good and food was delicious and served quickly. Only thing I noticed was that the takoyaki didn’t have the Japanese mayo on it but was still good though. Will recommend and go to again.

Fried boneless chicken is really good! Juicy and well seasoned. Small poke bowl is great for one person. Fresh and assorted diversely. Reasonable prices. Love it!

The restaurant has a very nice setup where you can dine on a cute porch (inside) and, through its windows, you get really nice views of the street. I have to say, the tempura shrimp is the best I’ve ever had. So crispy, fluffy, perfectly cooked and not oily at all! The edamame were good and the steamed vegetable dumplings were really good too. The makis were good but the options they have aren’t the usual maki options you see in other restaurants and I feel like I would have enjoyed the usual options more than the ones they offer. The fish tasted really fresh though!

The reason I am giving a low review is because of the server’s behavior. I tipped 1 dollar, and I know it is not 15% but that doesn’t mean that you should ask the customer to not come to the restaurant and instead order a take out. I don’t understand how come someone can be so entitled for a tip. I work as well but never felt entitled for tips. Makes no sense to me. The reason why the business is working is because of the customers who come to the restaurant. If they won’t come then how will you generate money and also how will you survive. Think before you make such statements. I have always loved the food and today as well I loved it but you need to be practical about the customers tipping. Not everyone wants to pay the tips.

Very fresh and high quality sushi/sashimi. We tried the Chirasi bowl which comes with Miso soup and rice, a Volcano sushi roll and Takoyaki. All items were a bit hit! There was a oily smell in the restaurant when we walked in but the food and quick service made up for it! Recommend making a reservation as there is limited seating.

My favorite is the beef udon noodle soup! I tried the dinner set one for one. Paired with some sushi. Everything was good. The takoyaki needed more octopus meat. Great customer service and enjoyed my meal!

Incredibly fast with placing take out orders! Great vegetable tempura and avocado rolls. Window seats overlooking Newbury and everyone is always friendly. Lunch bento boxes are a great deal! Teriyaki dinner platter is fantastic as well. I will continue to come back here. Everyone is always friendly and the wait is never too long.

Went here a few months ago and was quite pleased. Gyuhama is sorely missed and I kept trying to find a suitable replacement. Yamato doesn’t quite fill the bill and didn’t want any sushi joint too upscale and pretentious (looking at you Douzo Sushi). Umai fits the bill perfectly. Just an ordinary place to enjoy sushi and at reasonable prices. I will be returning.
