This place is a hidden gem. The folks running the place are polite, professional, and ready to meet your needs. The food speaks for itself. Anyone looking for traditional BBQ, this place does not disappoint. The food is high quality, and the flavors take me back to my native Tennessee roots. Wow, does not do it justice. The place is cozy with only a few tables, so you should plan to take it to go. They are only open Thursday through Saturday, so you will have to plan to be here at the right time. If you like BBQ, this is a MUST STOP excursion. Milton is the owner, and he is very hands-on. He takes the time to talk to the patrons, and you can tell he genuinely loves to make amazing BBQ and make his customers smile. I can not recommend this place enough.

Best bbq in Columbia! The chopped bbq plate is $17.99. They give you a large portion and I was able to eat off the plate 3 times. Lol! So it’s worth the money.

Went there for the first time this past Saturday. Was greeted very kindly by Milton. He remembered our names throughout the time there, that stuck out, and I bought a “True BBQ” shirt. The food was great, all three styles of BBQ. I’m from North Carolina and I don’t do “Mustard based”. The Vinegar based was excellent and my son had MB’sd. I just can’t say it. This is “real” BBQ!!!!!

This is the real deal: authentic Southern style smoked pulled pork, smoked chicken, beef brisket, and smoked ribs. You get a choice of three sauces: mustard based, ketchup based, and vinegar based. Plates come with hash and rice, which you can also purchase separately by the quart. As someone recently pointed out to me, the hash is a liver hash that is very hard to find outside this geographic area. The sides are all good. My family especially loves the collard greens. The restaurant is still takeout only and it’s only open limited hours and limited days of the week. (Check the website for more details, but at the present time they are only open 11 AM to 8 PM, Friday and Saturday only, and they often run out near the end of operating hours.) Note: a vegetarian will enjoy the sides.

LAVERNA GOT FAVOR
I don’t like writing these types of reviews. Prayerfully it will make a difference in the future on giving good customer service. I’m big on supporting our communities and black owned businesses. I normally go to another black owned BBQ restaurant whenever I have a taste for great BBQ. Unfortunately they were closed for vacation. I went online searching for the next best. I called TRUE BBQ before I went on that side of town to get a price on their dinners. A young lady answered, I should have known then the type of service I was going to receive by the way she spoke to me on the phone. I really had a taste for some BBQ. I asked more than once how many ribs came with my dinner? She stated “3.” I asked for the total of my order. She said she couldn’t give me the total because someone else else will take my payment.

First time trying and probably my last. Not the best BBQ I’ve ever had. I got a 2 bbq sandwich plates with coleslaw, the meat was so dry I almost choked trying to swallow it. I had to get my own BBQ sauce from the my refrigerator and put it on so it would actually taste like a bbq sandwich. And the fried okra wasn’t crispy at all, it was very soggy. I was highly disappointed with it especially for the amount of money I spent on it to be so dissatisfied. But the banana pudding was good, that was about it. Sorry for the terrible review just being honest.

The chopped BBQ is out of the world (especially with the mustard based sauce) and is served with the best hash and rice you’ll ever find. The staff made sure our family was well fed and Milton even sent us on our way with a blessing 🙂 Absolutely fantastic experience for honest food from honest people.
