The Crack Shack originally started as a passion project to transform the pristine, local ingredients from the founding team’s fine dining restaurant into a more accessible, casual setting. What started as a humble, open-air chicken spot in San Diego in 2015 has now transformed itself into a nationally-acclaimed eatery with cult following. The secret sauce behind the crave-able “SoCal Fried Chicken” is the non-GMO, beyond free range birds fresh from Jidori Farms. While bone-in is the staple, the menu boasts unique chicken sandwiches, hearty bowls for the healthy-ish and a Lil’ Cluckers menu kids love and grown-ups feel good about serving.

We were very excited to try this restaurant but left pretty disappointed. The service was great and the sandwiches looked amazing, but looks aren’t everything. Our Firebird sandwiches tasted like the chicken was just rolled in spicy flour, no salt. The buns and toppings were good but the bland chicken took over. They were also super greasy which Can be okay sometimes if the flavor is right which was not the case. We might try again and order something else next time hoping for better tasting options especially for the price.

Pretty impressed. Good vibes. Good menu. Good service. One of my new favorite chicken spots, ranks in my top 10% of chicken sandwiches. Only bummer was the fries, pretty absorbent of the duck fat it’s cooked in, very greasy. Fry sauce was money. We’ll be back.

I have heard mixed reviews of this place so I wasn’t in a rush to try it. Finally made my way out and gave it a try. I truly loved it. I ordered the Cesar salad with fried chicken tossed in honey butter . Oh man it was so good!!!! The Cesar sauce was delicious. My husband was envious. He ordered the tenders and fries. We also ordered the mini biscuits. They were so good . The staff was amazing! The cooks were the friendliest. I felt like I was coming over to dinner in their home. I just ate there yesterday but I’m going back again today. So good

Enjoyed the basic chicken sandwich with a side of large fries. Had four sauces to pick from: ranch, BBQ, fry sauce and then pineapple mustard. The mustard sounds weird but was delightful. Lots of chicken places to pick from around here so it’s hard to recommend this above any others largely due to the higher price point (compared to others). That being said I have no complaints about the sandwich I tried or fries. They have other intriguing options I’d be interested in trying another time.

The atmosphere is hip and cool. They have a patio with turf so even in the heat it’s safe for dog’s paws. The food is great, the value is right, and they have a bar for enjoying an adult beverage.

This place is excellent — I’m excited to go back soon. The chicken is high quality, and it’s very filling. The flavor on the Firebird was good, but there was almost TOO much going on. Next time I’ll probably grab another sandwich.

The Firebird is a great hot chicken sandwich. Presentation is an absolute 10. The onions didn’t really do anything for me taste-wise, but the pickles have a nice zip and crunch, and the chicken has a really good heat. They didn’t ask me if I had a heat preference, but the spice was on par with other medium-hot sandwich’s I’ve had. Not overwhelming, and definitely not mild.

This Im was my first time visiting this establishment and was very pleasantly impressed with the service. The food was very good too. My family and I had the Firebird, the Cali drip and the Buffalo; they were very good. I would not recommend the firebird if you’re too sensitive to spice. I loved it but my son in law teared a little and because he couldn’t eat it, we ordered something else but the management went completely out of their way to make sure he was satisfied. Good food, a place for the kids to play, and excellent service.
