Shogun is one of the hidden gems of a place in Newton area. It has authentic Japanese decor and ambiance. It is a warm and welcoming place and has plenty of options for everyone. They have a lot of vegetarian friendly options as well. I would recommend trying their hot Sake during the colder weather. It’s really brings it all together.

This is hands down the best Japanese restaurant in all of Boston. My girlfriend and I went tonight on our drive back into town and we both have a new favorite overall restaurant. The service was excellent, the server (likely an owner) was extremely nice and utterly adorable. The sushi chef (also probably an owner) was also extremely nice. Every single item we got was above the bar, most of them by a long way. The teriyaki sauce was amazing, and clearly homemade, the katsu sauce was to die for, and the udon was very good with plenty of meat and each different item in the udon was excellent. Finally, as someone who has never really met sushi they liked before, the sweet potato roll was perfect. I understand now why sushi is supposed to be eaten exactly as is, because the balance of everything is perfect.

First try as a take out. Our whole family love those: alligator rolls, vegetable and shrimp tempura, and age-dashi tofu. Tempura was my daughter’s favorite, and she kept saying all were so delicious! We will definitely try other dishes next time!

Sushi tasted fresh and was pretty good, but wasn’t made very well. There was too much rice and not rolled well, so that was a bit disappointing. The staff were very friendly and there’s a cool atmosphere inside!

The food is always exquisitely prepared and presented. Ito San is a true sushi master, and Jose does a wonderful job in the kitchen as well as serving. My family has been going there for nearly 30 years! Shogun is a West Newton gem.

Unlike most Japanese restaurants, this one is owned by the Japanese. It is a tiny restaurant and only operated by a couple, so the service is slow, especially when there are more people. The food and the service are good. If you are hungry, go somewhere else, but if you want to spend time with friends and family, don’t mind waiting for the dishes, this is an excellent place to go.
