No MSG No Garlic Foodie
Portage Bay came up on a Google search for brunch places around the Fauntleroy Ferry. From the reviews I have read, it is necessary to make a reservation. But on a weekday, there were plenty of tables. My partner ordered Bananas Foster French Toast, which came with a visit to the berry bar. Although powdered sugar was skipped by request, the french toasts were drenched with kraken rum and caramel sauce. It looked so unhealthy I did not ask for a taste. I came for the crab cakes, but I quickly got distracted by the marketing descriptions of “local broccoli, carrots” and ordered the 3 eggs omelette with sautéed heavy greens. I had said many times in the past that I hate omelettes because I found the extremely boring. That day, I surprised even myself. As it turned out, I am still right. The contents inside the omelettes amounted to two table spoons of chopped up pieces of carrots, broccoli and bacon. The heavy greens was so heavy with vinegar that caught my throat at every bite. The house-made wheat and honey toast was dry and cold, and using the entire package of butter on it did not help moisten it because the butter did not melt. I should have stuck with crab cakes. For pancakes, the berry bar is a good idea. I must mark this place on my Google list as sugar heavy.

Went looking for a GF breakfast place to take my celiac wife to, and this place popped up. Took a look at the menu, decided it looked tasty, and—turns out it is! Absolutely delicious, and they remade her food when they accidentally put a glutenfull toast on her plate rather than gf.

Very good brunch. Crepes are delicious, potatoes are very crunchy and good. We did not wait more than 5 minutes to be seated in a somewhat packed restaurant. Food was ready quite fast. Paid parking around, as well as street parking and free parking lot across the street.

Best brunch! And even better service! I had the Huevos Rancheros and it was the best I’d ever had of that dish. It was hard to stop, but I had to because I wanted to try the Bananas Foster French Toast. All pancake and French Toast items include a trip to the pancake “bar” that has delicious fresh fruits, whipped cream, chocolate chips, and nuts to top your dish with. The raspberries were bigger than any I’ve received from the grocery store or Costco, and they were so good.

Seattle Benedict. The dungeness crab was cold and threw me off a bit layered in the rest of the warm meal.

Great brunch! The portion sizes are great for the prices, and everything is delicious. So happy West Seattle now has a Portage Bay! We particularly liked the potatoes with hot sauce and fluffy pancakes.

I love Portage Bay, which is why I’ve been reluctant to post a review. This cannot to be a stellar review. I work in the university district, and have been a customer of their other locations for decades. I was super excited to have one near home. It took three attempts to get a table here. The first time, I was told it was a holiday weekend and I should have planned ahead if I wanted to table at any point during the weekend. The second time, I arrived at open on a Sunday and was told that the only way to get a table other than at the bar was to make a reservation. I asked about this policy because this certainly isn’t my experience with their other locations and I was told that I didn’t know I was talking about. Politely but nonetheless, that was the message. The third time I made a reservation for a 9:00 a.m. on a Sunday. I requested an outdoor table since my husband is immunocompromised and has difficulties walking/needs a cane. There were at least eight open tables outdoors, yet we were seated at one that set at a slope. A very significant slope. So significant in fact that the condensation from the water glass dribbles down the table into your lap. No joke. I didn’t want to make a fuss, as the staff who answered my questions the week before were polite, but not warm or friendly. The meal was uncomfortable, with my husband having significant trouble dealing with everything being on an angle. The food was decent, I probably wouldn’t complain about it at all except I’ve been to the other locations. It’s an old saying that comparison is the thief of happiness. However, the breakfast potatoes at this location are nothing like the one served at the other locations. Which made no sense since we were served slightly after open and they should have been fresh. Seriously, I’m uncertain if they were leftover from the day before or in fact frozen when cooked to get that effect. My suggestion would be to rotate your stuff out from this location to the other locations, because they definitely would have the opportunity to see what right looks like. This may be growing pains, just a tough day/ month in general, and I will probably give them at least one more try because of the many years of excellent experiences with their other locations.

Best brunch in Seattle! Sara is the best server! The Breakfast sandwich is my go-to but the Swedish pancakes have my heart. The grapefruit mimosas are so delicious.

We were SO excited to hear that PBC was opening a branch in WS. I routinely take all my visitors to one of the other locations for PNW inspired food that is innovative and seasonal.
