New to Albany and wanted a Chinese soup and dinner. After a few reviews picked on Peral of the Orient hot and sour soup and Szechuan chicken were to the point. Slightly different seasoning but none the less both the hot soup and the chicken hit home. May have got our go to Chinese in Albany.

Pearl of the Orient, what you’ve just created is one of the most insanely unpalatable things I have ever tasted.

The food was mediocre. The General Tsos had green peppers, which was kind of weird and it was not saucy, which is why I think people like it. The flavor was almost indistinguishable from the sesame chicken, and not spicy at all. Plus, the plastic container was split in two, reducing the size of rice you get. Rice is pretty cheap, so I’m not sure it’s the wisest idea to short change customers with something that would provide great satisfaction at little cost. It wasn’t inedible, so it gets two stars.

I had been looking around for a good Chinese restaurant that wasn’t just a buffet of semi-Chinese semi-American food, and I found it in Pearl of the Orient. My party and I showed up for a dinner meal at 6:30pm, where we found the restaurant to be pretty empty save for a couple other parties. The music was light but came across clear as the atmosphere was calm, very unlike a Chinese Buffet. I took notice of the rather impressive selection of alcohol at the bar, but was unable to try one of the many specialty drinks when I discovered I left my ID at home and didn’t want to take the chance they’d ask to see my card and I come up empty handed. I believe our waitress was also the proprietor, who was friendly, funny, and exchanged many jokes with my family. I ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken with the Wanton Soup, the soup coming out first and was excellent! I ended up emptying the bowl and drinking the brother it was that good, where I normally will reframe from picking up the bowl and drinking from it. The Sweet & Sour Chicken put any buffet or take out version to shame, never before have I experienced Sweet & Sour Chicken that was professionally done as a sole dish. I picked my plate clean and was very satisfied, only thinking of a small desert. Sadly there was no desert on the menu on this particular visit, but luckily there is an ice cream shop right across the street.

Delicious food, great service, great atmosphere. Try dining in sometime. Every time we’ve gone it’s been pleasantly quiet, and it beats eating Chinese food out of cardboard and plastic for the million-and-seventh time.

I’ve ate here several times, I always order the General Tso chicken with fried rice. The food comes out quick and it’s great. I’d recommend giving Pearl of the Orient a shot if you are in the mood for some good Chinese food.
