Hit and miss with the food here. Might’ve been an off day but I was disappointed. Ambience and service were good, this is the only remotely fancy restaurant you’ll find in CV and has an interesting take on Mexican, but quality was not up to par given the cost.. The menu does rotate so I’d maybe try it again but not in any rush.

I stumbled upon Oculto because I was looking for an espresso martini in the neighborhood after a coworker introduced the drink to me on a work trip. Turned out to be way better than a great spot for a cocktail. I happily travel all over the world for a great meal, but imagine my delight at finding such a high quality and innovative restaurant in my own backyard. Everything we tried was delightful and surprisingly affordable for what you get. The owner, chefs, and staff are all wonderfully lovely people, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a meal or two at Oculto to even my pickiest of foodie friends.

The best meal I’ve had in Castro Valley. The tostada and papas bravas were incredibly satisfying. Chef Mike is incredibly talented and came out to talk about each dish as it came out. The service was impeccable.

Thanks to this “talented Mexican-American chef,” Oculto is indeed helping put Castro Valley on the culinary map (Mercury News). We loved every plate we ordered and service was on point. Fun atmosphere upstairs in the market, with live music after 8pm (at least on the Friday we were there). Reservations highly recommended.
