Modern Stone Age Kitchen Menu – Chestertown, MD

Type : Health food restaurant

Location : Chestertown, MD

At the MSAK, we transform familiar foods such as bread, pizza, cheese, tacos, soups, sandwiches and even cookies into their healthiest versions by using ancestral and traditional approaches to maximize the safety, nutritional value, and flavor of everything we produce. All of our food is made 100% from scratch in-house. We ferment all of our grains using a wild, long fermented sourdough process; nixtamalize our maize; soak all nuts, seeds & legumes; butcher & cook using a nose-to-tail approach; make our own fermented dairy products (cheese, yogurt, and fermented butter), only use unrefined sweeteners plus animal based fats for cooking to optimize the safety and nutritional value of our food. Stop in and taste the difference!

As I entered here I was greeted by very kind/helpful staff, and an open welcoming environment. From plenty seating indoor/outdoor to the visible kitchen and prep area you get a sense of comfort and interest in the food! Although the prices are very reasonable and they have wonderful options for homemade breads, I had the unfortunate experience of ordering the chicken salad sandwich with chips. The chicken salad itself was mostly fine at first glance but the taste itself leaned towards bland and confusing in texture, of which I could almost describe as near puree. The chips which i was told were made in house were simply sadness in little somewhat crispy potato form. I will be coming back here to try other options and hopefully have a better review to give!

I am so thankful my friend introduced me to this place. I have been here a few different times and always have good food no matter what I get. I have had a breakfast sandwich and its all you could wish for, also the donuts are an absolute favorite, and so is the pizza, as well as the pretzels, and barley ale bread, and biscuits and gravy, I have not had anything that i wouldn’t purchase again.

I made my way to Chestertown this morning to pick up a few items – Granola, Nix Nacks (2), and Tortilla Chips. Each of these items are so delicious. I add the Granola to my yogurt, and sample the Nix Nacks and Tortilla chips as my snacks.

Casual spot featuring ingredients made with local biome ingredients, especially yeasts and microbes for fermentation. Attached to local research nonprofit encouraging food studies viewed through archeology and anthropology. Breads are a revelation. Staff was friendly and cheerful, albeit a bit harried. Outdoor seating appears nice, but indoor seating is limited and is hemmed in by the service counter, proofing fridge, and grab and go cases. Our table was uneven and rocked. Would definitely return, but only for carry-out.

Event Catering: We conducted an event at Washington College (Chestertown, MD) and wanted to provide lunch for 50-60 people after The Game. We contacted Christina and Bill looking for a post-game lunch – both food and drinks for the team and their visiting families – and boy did they come through! We had sandwich platters of a few kinds, salads of a few kinds, chips of a few kinds, desserts (of a few… you get it) and drinks ALL delivered spot-on time and right to the campus! We asked if they would text us once on the way, met them exactly where needed, and got set up ‘in the field’ with ease. Could not have been more convenient!

Wonderful bakery and breakfast/lunch stop. Wide assortment of baked goods (and other starches), all made with a sourdough base. Perhaps the sourdough croissants weren’t as wonderful as might be, but I have et to find anyone who has said anything other than glowing words over their sourdough waffles or foccacia! Breads, pretzels, bagels, (all made into sandwiches or breakfast sandwiches as well) are worth the stop!

THE FOOD IS AMAZING AND EVERY SINGLE THING IS MADE FROM SCRATCH! All their flour products, bread, pizza, croissants, etc are all made form sour dough fermentation! I took the fermentation classes with my bff friend group at MSAK and we all loved the class! We were fascinated with the fact that fermented foods had such good health effects on us, especially the benefits of using and fermenting raw dairy. The bonus was that Bill was not just an interesting teacher that shared alot of indigenous wisdom from his time as an archeologist and an ancestral foods chef, but he and his wife are really warm, caring people, and have a great sense of humor, which my friends really appreciated. We also realized how labor intensive it is to prepare all these wonderful foods at a commercial operation, and how important it is for all of us to patronize busniesses that provide healing food to the public. I can’t say enough good things about our classes and just our experience being at MSAK. WE LOVE THEM AND THEIR FOOD!!!

MSAK is one of the most conscious, ethical eateries I know! One of the few places I trust to feed me as a health conscious person, I would eat almost everything on the menu knowing how much care they put into preparing food as safe and nutritious as possible according to ancient food traditions as researched by Dr. Bill Schindler. Not to mention it’s delicious! I went here for a course in “eating like a human” and gained much value from it.

We love MSAK but today they helped us celebrate my daughter’s 13th birthday! The entertained 11 middle schoolers by teaching them to make pretzels, letting them eat a fresh one, and sending them home with 2 to make. They also made 13 of her favorite muffins to have instead of cake! Excellent and unique birthday celebration that I didn’t have to clean up! Highly recommend!
