Having moved here from TN, I’m missing BBQ. Yesterday (4/3/2014) I had my first bite of Mike’s. I will say that it satisfied my craving and then some. Many places up here in WA try to make BBQ, but fall short. Mike’s nailed it! The true test is the smoky tender meat without sauce. It has it. Then you top it with the sauce, wow. A true party in your mouth. I really like their cole slaw. It’s not a mayo-based slaw, but a wonderful sweet spicy vinegar base. (I really really liked it!)

We came to Port Gamble to play for my son’s 11th Birthday. We had read some reviews about Mike’s 4 Star BBQ and decided to check it out. As soon as we entered the door, I felt like we had come home. The staff was remarkable in immediately making us feel welcome- very friendly and kind. Looking around the restaurant, it was clear they had put their hearts and souls into the place, from license plates from all over, to pictures of old… and the food was incredible, and plenty! It tasted like a home-cooked meal that was made with love.Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, suddenly the whole restaurant (and there were a LOT of people, the restaurant was full) erupted into song, singing “Happy Birthday dear Evan!” as one of the staff brought a special-made chocolate sundae (with bacon bits to boot- it’s actually good!) – to say my son was surprised was an understatement- he turned around to see every face in the room smiling at him, singing to him on his special day. Apparently the gal up front had gone to every table and told them a child was having a B-day, his name was Evan, and she choreographed everyone into song ! For her to do this, and for them to come out with this special surprise, well I have never been treated so well by “strangers”, never cared for so much in a “public place” – I have to admit I got a little teary eyed. This is the kind of service that goes WAY beyond usual , to say they raised the bar would be a huge understatement. On the way out,I gave the gal a hug (I wished I had caught her name, she was a lovely little brunette working the front counter), and told her they had truly made Evan’s birthday something he would remember forever – this is the kind of establishment that puts a mark on the map, the kind of place that cares for the individual- I thought I’d only heard of such places from my grandparents, during a period in history where people actually cared- we came back to that place in time last night 🙂 Thank you so much, we will definitely be back again 😀 Lauren, Ellienn, and Evan Shouse
