I ate at the Owamni in Minneapolis and it was an awesome experience but lacked flavor. This place Miijim had the same exciting concept but with great flavor and well seasoned dishes that popped. Interesting ingredients like Bison Heart kept the experience unique. But good seasoning and excellent flavor knowledge of sweat and savory made every dish taste great! The use of a blue berry sauce was on several dishes gave excellent sweat accents.

I had a lovely dining experience last night!! I made a reservation for the four of us two days before without issue, and definitely recommend that over a walk in. We ended up trying the entire menu, minus the rabbit due to its popularity that evening. Highlights for us were probably the venison loin, manoomin hash, and the hominy, but really our entire meal was amazing and unique. Our server gave us a great explanation of the menu and was attentive and sweet throughout the service. I highly recommend giving Miijim a visit next time you find yourself island bound :))

Every so often i have a meal that i just can’t stop thinking about–this was one of those experiences. Each of our five plates we got were unique, thoughtful, and delicious, unlike anything i’ve had outside of the cities. It’s incredibly refreshing see a restaurant in a small town that takes risks and serves food from an under-appreciated cuisine that is creative both in flavors and presentation. This coupled with the significance of a native restaurant on the island and the history of the area makes Miijim truly an incredible experience. Go in with an empty stomach and an open mind and enjoy. The braised rabbit and manoomin hash are a great place to start.

Niimiigwechiwendam! I am thankful! The menu when I dined there was about 5 proteins and 5 sides on the menu. Tapas style dining, shared plates is the way to go so you can try some of everything. The portion sizes are modest, don’t expect a pile of food for one menu item. Very tradish and elevated Ojibwe cuisine. Expect seasonal vegetables, mushrooms, berries, proteins and starches. I had the bison plate, rabbit plate, and the hominy plate. I can taste my ancestors in these dishes, which is grounding and exciting because we don’t have Ojibwe cuisine in restaurants around here…yet. The chaga mole on the hominy was tasty af. But the real winner in my opinion, the strawberry moon dessert. HOWAH! That sunflower mousse had so much flavor and the rhubarb was the perfect texture. It had a light crunch and the strawberries were sweet and just danced with the pumpkin seeds and salt. It was a fabulous meal!

We really enjoyed all the food we tried (about half the menu). Giving the atmosphere 4/5 because we sat on the patio and I’d say it’s a standard patio. Though they played music that I personally enjoyed very much. Inside looked very nice, and when we come back, I’ll be getting a reservation.

We visit Madeline Island every summer, and we were so excited for this new restaurant this year. Everything was delicious. The food was very different than what we are used to, but it was so fun to try new things. We went out on a limb with everything we ordered, and we were not disappointed. Can’t wait for next summer!

Small plates were really incredible and my body felt so good during and after eating. After trying both meat and vegetable dishes, all of which were delicious, I have to say Miijim’s mushroom dishes are a must have.

I’ve had the bison, rabbit, and boiled potatoes. Everything has been phenomenal. Cooked to perfection, beautifully seasoned, and the service was great. Very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable staff.

Beautiful place and we were looking for a unique experience while on the island. The hostess was friendly and accommodating. Our server was not. Our group tried numerous dishes only one was cooked right. My rabbit was almost raw. The elk was over cooked and tough. The bison was good. Seasoning was very bland in all. Beautiful plates and maybe it was an off night. And no fry bread! A staple in the Ojibwe culture. That would be a huge added bonus to the experience for those that have never experienced Ojibwe food before. It also would help to justify the price of the meals.
