Masabaga is a small restaurant in Uptown Oakland with a small menu based on Japanese-inspired burgers. The food is excellent, the portions are pretty generous, and the prices are good for the quality of food. The “masabaga” sandwich is very light and fresh with the use of spring greens and mint, yet also decadent for such a crispy katsu/tempura-style fried tuna sandwich. Included was the tapioca crackers that pairs well with sandwich and is nicely seasoned with a little bit of lime.

“Respected SF sushi chef Masa Sasaki (Sasaki) gets into the burger game — specifically, the tuna belly burger game, opening what may well be a first-of-its-kind restaurant concept in the former Hutch space in Uptown Oakland.”

Food was delicious. Light where it needed to be, deeply rich and satisfying across the board. And it traveled so very well. Not a huge menu, but all prepared beautifully which is something I truly prefer (vs. say….Cheesecake Factory). Loved that the taro crisps featured Taijin. The only thing we didn’t share and proceed to order was the Mackerel but I get scared when bone in fish is around…I should reread the menu and dispell this “fear”. Cannot wait to dine in as the design is quite fresh, as well. A++++++++

Man oh man…. this place is VERY GOOD! Everything on the Masabaga worked together beautifully. The mint was genius. And despite being fried and hearty portions, it’s not heavy or too rich at all…I ate the whole thing and the sesame fries in one sitting. I’ll be back!

Both burgers were very good. I no idea what to expect with the tuna belly burger, but it exceeded my expectations nonetheless.
