Authentic Japanese taste, quick service, great atmosphere. Marugame Udon is very clean and completely staffed. There are also plenty of seats and tables available. We went here around 1:00 pm for lunch. You get your noodles very fast because it’s a cafeteria style restaurant where you pick up your noodle order, move through the tempura bar for a topping, then drinks and cashier. I’ll definitely be back to try the other menu items.

Udon was tasty, fresh and chewy. I got their nikutama bowl with the extra green onions, tempura flakes and a few tempura pieces as a side. I usually appreciate rich soups but I found it needed something to cut the flavour, the ginger and green onion did help. The line did move at a steady pace, and we were able to find a spot to sit and eat right away.

This place was super cool and fun to eat at. The fresh udon noodles were crazy good. I got the nikutama and they cracked an egg into my bowl that came out perfectly soft boiled which awesome. The flavor of the soup was unique and savory. The tempura was fresh and tasty too. I thought that my leftovers weren’t nearly as good as when it’s fresh so eat up when it is!

Traditional udon eatery in the middle of south coast plaza on the first floor. There is typically there is a long line to order your udon. They have a selection of tempura and other delicacy that go with your udon as well. Food is fresh and tastes great. Not too many tables and seats so you may have to huddle to find a seating spot. Prices are very reasonable. There is one server that walks around “wiping” the tables with a dirty rag but everything is pretty much self serve. If you are craving Japanese or udon particularly, this is a safe bet in the heart of OC.

The nikutama udon was delicious, very flavorful and well balanced. Service was alright as it’s cafeteria style where you go down a line and choose stuff to put on your tray. Atmosphere was alright, generally pretty rowdy as it’s right in the mall and there’s usually a long wait to get served.

So glad to finally try this place after hearing about it for so long. I got the Curry Nikutama udon which has a thicker savory sauce that comes with sweet beef and a soft egg. Tempura flakes and green onions are optional. Highly recommend if you love the japanese curry flavor. Since it’s such a busy location, the tempura is always getting refilled so it’s fresh. The line does get long but the turnover was quick.

Gahdamn, the food here is wasn’t feeling in the mood for meaty udon so I ordered the Kitsune and got some tempura shrimp and chicken on the side. The kitsune was amazing! I fell in love with it. A lil sweet but just right. The serving size was good for me as I was starting to get full after eating the Tempura which was beautifully fried to perfection. We went during lunch on a weekend and the line was a little long but service was fast. The only downside was there was not enough seating but thats okay because the food is definitely worth your money.

South Coast location of an udon focused chain. Came here for dinner before a show at Sergestrom around 6pm and it was about a 15-20 minute for the line. You order first and pay before sitting down. You can order pickup online in advance but note that you can’t sit inside. The space is good for mainly small groups although there is one large table in the back that could fit about 8. There are restrooms available in the back. Credit cards accepted. It’s located by the Forever 21.
