I recently visited Mario’s in Crystal Lake, Illinois, for lunch. The restaurant was empty, but they had a food truck. It’s a family-owned place, and we chose to dine in. The chips were fresh but too salty for my liking. I ordered vegan tacos and horchata. The horchata was really good, although it tasted store-bought. However, the tacos were below average. Each taco on the plate had avocado, with varying combinations of onion, rice, and pepper. Unfortunately, the black beans were cold and seemed to be from a can. Overall, it was a mixed experience, with some hits and misses.

I got the sampler platter, Mario’s nachos, and a couple margaritas and I know I’ll be coming back again. I was really excited to have this place open but was a bit weary of coming when I saw the initial low star rating, it looks like they have been actively listening and improving what they had the power to. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere is cute, the art on the walls is beautiful and the colorful decor adds to it all. The meat was well seasoned, the nachos and flautas were crunchy, the guacamole jalapeños and lettuce were fresh, and the nachos had this light cheese on them that was delicious. The margaritas were also definitely good and well presented.

Atmosphere was great! Staff was very friendly and attentive. Our server Yasmin was awesome . It was our first time there and brought our 1 year old twins. The margaritas are some of the best I’ve had in mchenry County. The food was amazing.Vegan options. So happy we found this place. We will definitely be back

The water tastes like bleach. the hot sauce is watery. there’s no salsa for the chips. the beans were served dry like they had been left in an oven and then set to cool the rice was dry and kind of bland. The server tried to take my hot sauce away from me Mid way through my tacos. There’s a child server. The men’s bathroom has a urinal with a cabinet right in front of it. All in all I would go down the street to a real proper Mexican restaurant this ain’t that the staff kind of sucks as well nervous inexperienced. The whole thing feels like a catalog restaurant The best way to put it is the Mario’s logo has a very deformed skull… … … And $17 for a three taco dinner you can go down the street and get the same thing for $13
