I recently ventured into Makan in Washington DC, and while it didn’t quite hit the coveted 5-star mark, it’s definitely a spot worth checking out! Here’s the dish on my experience at this cozy gem.

Great hippy restaurant in developing area on 11th st. Great vibes! The place is always full which indicates even greater food. We had chicken curry which was absolutely amazing. Definitely the star of our dinner. Chicken skewers came with fabulous peanut/curry dipping sauce. All chicken was cooked to perfection. To be honest, every plate that was carried to other tables took amazing. Dried beef curry is the star dish as well. Keep in mind – the food is SPICY! I wouldn’t recommend mackerel noodle soup though. It wasn’t bad, but just very strong type of river fish flavor. We are definitely coming back!

The food is good BUT their service and attitude totally destroyed our experience. The greeter ‘s attitude is super rude, she threw the menus on the table and said ‘enjoy’ without an eye contact.

We have to sit at outdoor area because indoor dining area was bloked for private event. Have to wait quite long before the only waiter can help us. There’s other waitress/waiter too but look like they’re busy set up for the event. Nasi Lemak was edible but not really on point. But fried kwetiau and fried rice taste good and made my day a little bit better

We had walked past this restaurant so often on our way to other daily activities but finally decided to sit down for a meal. Makan was amazing, we chose outdoor seating the tables are so pretty and colorful and there is something about the awesome atmosphere of being right next to a pedestrian walkway that brought such vibrancy and liveliness to the overall experience. The employees were so attentive and kind and the employee at the front of house was so kind and gentle in nature too. My wife had the fish soup and I had the deep fried duck both were so so yummy!!! My wife also enjoyed a hot chai which was also super divine. Then we had dessert as seen in the photo. I strongly urge everyone to try Makan!! Please come here!!

As Malaysian who is born and raised there I have to said food here almost authentic Malaysian food. I was amaze with sambal udang petai that is our classic dish in Malaysia and it’s not easy to master because when you cook sambal you have to separated oil from sambal ( we called it pecah minyak) and chef did very well. I am big fan of sambal petai udang it’s so hard to get one in USA but chef make it happen in Washington DC. Beef rendang was 10/10 with spices compliment each other and tender beef too. Ayam masak merah I would say maybe 7/10 for my liking because I can taste cardamom / star anise quite strong for my taste buds but it’s still good . We order ayam goreng too and just hit the spot and salted egg duck yolk , that is how we cook in Malaysia. I order my nasi campur with coconut pandan rice and came together with regular rice. For dessert we order sago gula Melaka and Roti canai and custard dipping, oh that is the best part to finish our meals. So far this one of the best Malaysian restaurant I ever had in USA so far. Thank you chef for appreciate our food , it’s not easy to master Malaysian food as they are influence by Malay, Chinese , Indian, baba Nyonya peranakan. Chef really study about Malaysian food and how to cook from starch. I wish you have branch restaurant in California. I came Washington DC for visiting and I am surprised with Makan dc restaurant. I would like to try nasi lemak and roti canai but I will do when I come here again.

Malaysian food is definitely one of my favorites. I went to many Asian restaurants, but never came across Malaysian foods. This is a good restaurant to go to with your family. Good environment and good foods. I really love the noodle I ordered. It was authenticated.
