This is a no-nonsense old school type luncheonette serving great sandwiches at very fair prices. Whatever their secret is, it makes a difference in a good way and somehow puts their Cuban sandwich above the rest.

We arrived expecting the best Cuban sandwiches in Nj. To our disappointment they fell extremely short of our expectations. We bought 2 lunches (fried chic/rice/bean/plantains), a Cuban sandwich, and an assortment of croquetas. The lunches were eaten by our kids with no problem. But the review is based off of the so called best Cuban sandwich in town. The sandwich was dry, flavorless, no mustard, and pickles so thin they were non existent. The owner/old server was awesome. I have mixed feelings writing this review, but my disappointment overcomes my sense of respect to the owner. After eating he gave my kids free homemade plantain chips and my kids love it. The look of the place is run down, but I grew up in Hudson county and I don’t really care. I still however must give the atmosphere rating. In all if you want to give it a try maybe you will get the owner at a better day, but this would be my one and only visit.

When I was a teenager, my brother said we had to stop in a tiny restaurant, because he wanted a sandwich. He bough a “Cuban”, and handed half to me. I hated pickles, and it was a life-long hatred; the kind that you’ve marinated in, which drips from every inch of your body, without effort, but they shaved them so thin that it was more of a condiment than the olive-green disc of seedy rubber fast-food had made me expect. I didn’t know what they had slipped me, until I was half done enjoying it. The salty tang complimented the mojo pork and mojo sauce, not found on so many “Cuban sandwiches” outside this area. And that’s how fast I stopped hating pickles, shifting to the healthy suspicion a person should have in the first few steps toward making an enemy into a friend.

If you like Cuban sandwiches this is the place for you trust me. This Cuban sandwich was Zagat rated Okay. The rest of their Spanish food is average, but if you like Empandas then it’s a must visit a dozen or so different types of Empandas fillings. They are worth the $3.00 each

Great cuban sandwich! I ordered both the especial de la casa and the medianoche with a side of chicharone for to go and I was mindblown! I cannot say that they have the best cuban sandwich since I haven’t had one before but both sandwiches are the bomb! Can’t wait to go back again on my cheat day!

So a friend recommended this spot b/c he saw it on the food network as the best Cuban sandwich in NJ. Since we live in JC it wasn’t a far drive. As soon as you walk in you feel like it’s back in 60s/70s and you’re about to get some good authentic grub!
