Located in the heart of Berkeley’s Elmwood community, La Méditeranée has been a family and local favorite for generations of diners. Since 1982, our award winning Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes, such as meza plates, hummos, kebabs, and fillos, are made from scratch daily. Founder Levon Der Bedrossian and his cousin Garbis opened “Cafe La Med” with the goal of serving good food in a pleasant environment, with warm and friendly service. Our Mid-East and Mediterranean cuisine is inspired by chef Levon’s Armenian and Lebanese family recipes. Family owned and operated, we offer dinner, lunch, & brunch, as well as a daily happy hour, dining on our popular heated patio, and catering delivery & pickup. Anoush Ella! (May it be Sweet!)”

My wife and I came here with friends who kept telling us how great it is. It was relatively busy and the service was quite good but the food was not. Maybe I’m just picky but I struggled to find things on the menu and what we ended up ordering was so forgettable that I cannot recall anything we ate that night. The restaurant is fairly clean and certainly fits the area but I sat there all dinner wishing we had gone to the spot around the corner instead. Our friends will definitely be back. I won’t.

Excellent delicious pomegranate chicken drumsticks that wasn’t too sour or sweet but just right. The other chicken dough was quite good too.

So the food isn’t exactly what it used to be and the portion sizes have gone slightly down, but it’s still an overall good restaurant. The decor and ambiance make it an enjoyable experience. The food is flavorful and the service is pretty good. This week I had the middle eastern plate (which is my go to) and had zero complaints. One downside is that the Moroccan mint tea is/was way too sweet, which was kind of a disappointment, but nothing to deter me from ever returning.

The restaurant has great ambience and is perfect for a group gathering or a date night. However, the portion size was small for the price, particularly for the protein dishes. The most disappointing part of our visit was the service. Not only do they charge $1.5 per head for bringing our own birthday cake, but they really did not appear helpful or eager to help us when we asked for individual plates and utensils even though we were literally paying for the service that other places would have provided for free. We also had a server who kept trying to take away our plates even though there was plenty of food left in those dishes. Other staff members in the restaurant were more attentive to our requests but we really did not feel welcomed at all during the visit.

Fantastic food and friendly staff! The meat is perfectly tender and juicy, and the pastries were crispy and perfectly seasoned. We loved every single item on our dishes!

Beloved Berkeley old-school Mediterranean spot serving classic Mediterranean dishes, shawarma, falafel, hummus, Levant sandwiches, and a good wine list. This place is proof that I still have yet to really appreciate Greek/ Mediterranean cuisine, because while the lamb shawarma I ordered today was super tender, I just didn’t taste a lot of flavor in anything on the plate, where I expected to taste garlic, onion, salt, and other spices. Other spices. The entire plate was kind of mild for me, which might just be how that kind of food is. That said, it was still tender, clean, and good food, and one of the nicest eating environments in the East Bay, with overhead fans. A wide open space and a well lit environment. Great service, and a great location. Great location makes for a place worth eating if you like this kind of food, I just didn’t find it flavorful enough for my pallet. I’m still giving it five stars for quality

Overall we had a very enjoyable experience at La Mediterranee. We were able to walk in on Friday evening and get a table, which was great cuz we were both pretty hungry. We ended up getting the Meza plates to share, which gave us the opportunity to try a lot of different things on the menu.

I have been to La Mediterranee on several occasions. This was the first time that I came here during the day for lunch. My friend and I had a fun time sitting outside (they have a lot of seating outside) even though there were plenty of seats available inside.

I’m giving zero stars and that’s still too many. The server was rude, the food was the worse thing we have ever eaten our entire lives. It’s as though the food is prepared in a crock pot days ahead of time. My husband’s lamb schwamer was as though they poured a can of wet dig food on top of rice. Our bill was 103 dollars. We paid it and told them they could do whatever with the food. After taking one bite we all wanted to vomit. The manager ran outside and begged for forgiveness and my receipt so she could put the money back on our card. She lied she just wanted to look good in front of the outside seated customers. We don’t care she can have the 103 we will never eat here again nor recommend it to anyone.

Turkish or Greek style cooking. Very delicious food with attentive service. Sit indoors or at a few streetside outdoor tables. No beer on tap, only bottles.
