Gus’s Hot Dogs Menu – Birmingham, AL

Type : Hot dog restaurant

Location : Birmingham, AL

Gus’s Hot Dogs is an iconic hot dog stand located in a shotgun building under a parking deck at 1915 4th Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. When Greek immigrant Gus Alexander first opened it in 1947, it was on the same block at Birmingham City Hall.

Alexander sold the business to Alex Choraitis in the 1960s before moving back home to Greece. Choraitis, in turn, asked another Greek-American, George Nasiakos, to move to Birmingham from Chicago, Illinois to take over the restaurant in the mid-1990s. The sale closed on March 23, 1995. Nasiakos, known as Mr George, ran the restaurant until his retirement in April 2017. He sold the business to Lee Pantazis, who continues to run the restaurant and honor Birmingham’s Hotdog legacy.

Tiny joint long known for its eclectic hot dog lineup & special sauce, plus burgers & breakfast. Based on 831 reviews, the restaurant has received a rating of 4.6 stars. Price $

There are several Gus’s hot dog places near Birmingham. This one is apparently the original, too small to sit and enjoy a meal with friends. Barely any available parking. The service was great and quick. The special dog was delicious. The chili cheese dog had a burnt taste to the chili. In my opinion the irondale location has the better chili cheese dog. But this location has a good special dog, take it to go, be prepared to wait in line during peak times.

Me and my daughters were visiting a bookstore on a street over and I happened to see this place. I use to work downtown years back when I last ate there. Better than I remember! Yes there is no seating but that is part of the experience. We will be back for sure! Something tells me they have some great hamburgers. We had hot dogs this go around. Thanks!

Great bologna sandwich!! Small place though. Not much room to move around. We were able to get my cousins large wheelchair inside tho so big enough I suppose

If you enjoy a great hot dog and haven’t tried Gus’s, then you’re yet to understand what makes a great hot dog. A definite must-try that will turn into a regular stop. Service is fast and friendly. Plan accordingly because the joint stays jumping.

First off I would like to say their customer service was great. I’m pregnant and it was my first time there so I was kind of undecided on what I wanted but they were patient. And the hot dogs were the best I ever had. 10/10 recommended. This will definitely be my after work spot from now on.

For starters, it’s easy to miss as it’s a very small place but wow was it worth stopping in for! I walked in and told them I’m from SD and I travelled 1,100 so I just simply want to be impressed. I got the chili cheese dogs without onions and it was DELICIOUS! Both men were polite gentleman and made my first meal in Birmingham one to remember. Definitely recommend!

I’ve been coming here since the 90’s. This is the perfect dive bar, but be careful around lunch time because it’s packed, otherwise you’re in and out! The food is always delicious!

If you are following the industrial era hot dog trail as it weaves through the Midwest and Deep South, Gus’s is definitely worth a stop.

We got the special, one with kraut and the other without. Fantastic! I think they call kraut slaw in these parts. It’s been a minute since I’ve had a good sloppy chili dog and this chili is a lil sweet with a lil kick. 2 dogs with chip and drink won’t even cost you over $10. I definitely need to get back here for the burgers. A great pit stop traveling through Birmingham. Customer service was A-1 and the building is not wide so expect to be in a tight side. But the people felt like fam and they get you out quick. You must stop here!

Small, but clean. You order your food, then leave. No sitting down and the two guys taking your order and preparing your food are cool, calm and collected!
