Was really looking forward to dining here after a long day at work. Upon entering shortly after they opened at 7 pm, the smell of cleaning agents was quite noticeable. Seated quickly with both drink and food order taken promptly. Went with the Sunagimo Nanban ($6.50) which was fried chicken gizzards served on top of a decorative piece of lettuce and drizzled with sweet and sour sauce. This was a tad salty. For my entree, I ordered the Tempura Udon ($7.00) which came with two pieces of shrimp. They were soggy by the time I got to them. It tasted more like instant udon than something freshly made. Grateful for another meal, this experience was average at best.

Fun place and the food has been consistently excellent; if you want authentic, traditional Japanese dishes, then you should come here.

The food is amazing. I ordered the teriyaki chicken. What bothered me is the smell inside.

Genji is a staple. Have been coming here for over 10 years. Vast and reasonably priced menu. The food is delicious and the open karaoke definitely adds to the ambience. It can get busy, but I’ve never had issues getting sat within a few minutes.

Some customers were yelling and screaming while karaoke. Just wanted to leave Genji because of the loud noise.

Came here for late night food and they also had karaoke! The service was great and the food was yummy! The only thing that the food needed was a sauce for the tempura

I decided to try this place on a whim and was surprised to hear the staff speaking Japanese. The vibe is an old school Japanese Izakaya with a lot of menu items you would see at a place in Japan. I enjoyed the aji fry the most. I will return next time I’m in town perhaps with my Japanese coworkers whom I am sure will appreciate some home cooking.

The decor and fixtures are a bit outdated, besides that, everything was clean and comfy. Service is pretty attentive; my water was constantly filled. For food, my boyfriend and I got the tempura udon, a California roll, and the yaki udon. Everything was really good and cheap! Our food ended up being only $18. My friends ordered a variety of drinks and food and everybody was satisfied with their food. Karaoke started at 9:30 (I don’t know if that’s the same time for every day); you go up to pick your song from a tablet and then hand the number over to the employee and wait your turn. There are also private rooms you can book for $50 an hour. Overall, I really enjoyed everything and I’m happy to know of a new late night spot I can visit with friends.

My favorite real Japanese restaurant at karaoke bar, in the greater Houston area. The prices are reasonable, has karaoke in the main dining room and in the five private karaoke rooms.
