The owner/chef Ruben Monroy, the grandson of the original founder of the Restaurant, takes traditional dishes such as moles (they have a wide selection), squash blossom, quesadillas, and chiles rellenos, including one named after Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist who used bold colors, and other Mexican fare and elevates them to new heights. The expansive drink selection includes tequila and mezcal, Mexican wines and beers, Margaritas made with mango, tamarind, and agave honey, and mojitos and guanabanatinis – martinis that use guanabana fruit, a fruit native to Mexico.

Wow! What a treasure. As vegetarians, we were thrilled beyond words with the options and the attention to flavor and quality. Vegetarians, this gem of a restaurant is worth traveling great distances for to finally find a chef that leaves you swooning with every bite! I haven’t been to this location in several years and took a couple of friends for their first visit. I suggest making reservations as this location was busy for a late lunch on Sunday. The food and drinks were excellent. Service was a little slow as it was 20 minutes from being seated until our drink order was taken. Once our order was received, the courses were brought out promptly.

The restaurant is beautiful and the food tasted great. Especially the Queso appetizer (add chorizo). The prices were pretty high, but I guess that’s to be expected. I understand that the restaurant is popular, so they need to squeeze as many tables in as possible, but we felt like our table was too close to the bar. There were people standing at the bar, literally right behind my husband the whole time. Service was extremely slow because our server was the bartender, and there was a huge party seated in the bar area. We will try it again because the food was good and we really liked the look of the restaurant. When we make our reservations next time, we will ask to be seated away from the bar area.

Update – came here again for lunch with my family while visiting, after a hike on the Anza trail. The hostess staff seemed unimpressed with our arrival & that we didn’t have lunch reservations, and I imagined part of the response was due to them not liking our hiking attire.

Had our second experience and we were sober so everything was wonderful from the entrance to the restaurant we had a beautiful table with a great view of the candles. Our food was extraordinarily exceptional! They had a band playing music from all genres and a wonderful time!

Eclectic, interesting but a bit expensive. The queso fundido with mushrooms is a must have appetizer. If you like wine, the Madera is very good.
