We ate here twice because there were few palatable choices that were still open. Definitely didn’t want Pizza Ranch! There are thousands of great Mexican places in Chicago, so we are spoiled. The menu here is large- too large. When you come in tired from sightseeing, it feels overwhelming.

Went here a couple of times in June, 2022, while working in the area. On both occasions, the service was fast and friendly. Being a one-topper, I sat at the bar and, on the first visit, I asked for the biggest frozen margarita they had. They brought me a fishbowl on a stem! One of the biggest margaritas I have ever been served at a restaurant. I have to add that this was the best tasting frozen margarita I found in Dickinson! Chips, salsa, and queso were all very good. Ordered a Chile Relleno ala carte with queso instead of red sauce. I am not a big fan of crispy rellenos (I prefer the soft) but this one was very tasty and was probably one of the best crispy ones I have eaten. Came on a bed of rice with a little corn in it which was a perfect compliment. Only restaurant that I visited twice in my three weeks in Dickinson.

Had a super meal, enchilada, Chile rellenos, chalupa… all were very tasty! Wish we had ordered the Mexican rice as an add-on because it wasn’t included in the dish. Even though we arrived at dinner time, we were seated immediately! Service was great, food came out hot and very quickly. My only criticism is that it was very noisy – although, if I had been there with a group of my friends, I would have been just as loud!! Everyone was having fun! Would definitely recommend this restaurant!

I got the #11 lunch plate. I don’t know what was worse… the over cooked hamburger meat, the over abundance of it, the tamale with absolutely nothing in it, or the enchilada sauce and red burrito sauce that was all over all of it that looked, and tasted, like a crime scene. Also, the salsa was… aged. Yea we’ll call it that. The quesso was a bit thin, and flavorless as well.

Accidentally stopped here THINKING we were at another “El” restaurant that is actually rated well, thanks to the confused map & our own impatience with not reading the sign. Sigh

El Sombrero is the third mexican restaurant that I have tried in Dickenson. Sunday morning after a night of New Year’s Eve drinking. Their food saved my soul. Their cold beer eased my slight hangover. We could not have chosen a better breakfast. I even got my holiday tamale. Service was great food was excellent and atmosphere is appropriate. Thanks El Sombrero. Peace big John

From the moment we walked in, it was clear that the restaurant was overwhelmed, even though we were seated in a few minutes. Most of the tables that were unoccupied hadn’t been cleared, and those that were weren’t wiped clean. Where customers were seated, they had no food in front of them and most looked annoyed. After we were seated, the first thing our waiter did was apologize to the diners behind us and tell them it would be a few more minutes before their food arrived. And then he told us that the Kirchen was slow so it may take a while for us to get our food. Overall, our pre dining experience did not bode well.

Nice place to have beers in. Food was bland and under seasoned for a Mexican restaurant. I had the Carne Asada plate and it was very bland. I was also wanting a good margarita, but it turns out it’s just pre-made margarita mix that was not good at all. Chips, salsa and Guacamole were really good.
