Hands down amazing food, service & margarita. Super affordable too. Our waiter Mauritzo was absolutely fabulous. Sundays are really busy due to the church crowd but it’s worth the wait. Bonus, the tortillas are homemade. They can pump some serious food out of that kitchen.

The food was great, very authentic, and so was the service! Will be going back regularly, and we don’t even live in Hugo.

Very generous portions. Very fresh food. They were very welcoming. It was hard for our waiter to speak English but it was still fine. Definitely worth stopping to eat here if you are traveling through.

My husband and I went there for the first time on Palm Sunday. We both thought it had a nice atmosphere and think we’ll probably try it again, however, we’ll choose different plates. I really liked their hot sauce, my husband thought it was too mild, however, I like a milder hot sauce now. He ordered the Cheese Enchiladas with Chili Con Carne and a tamale . He liked the tamale okay giving it a three, however, he did not care for the sauce on the cheese enchiladas. He said his was not chili con carne, but a red sauce with meat in it in which he did not enjoy. I ordered the Spinach Enchiladas, but they brought me the wrong plate originally, however, the waiter was very nice and took it back. He then brought me the Spinach Enchiladas, but I think I would have enjoyed the wrong plate they brought me more. It did taste like fresh, plain cooked spinach with no spices or added touches and the sour cream sauce tasted very generic. I did enjoy the beans some, but wasn’t crazy about the rice. They did have a large menu to choose from and I am wonder if one of their specialty plates would taste better. Also, we were excited to hear they had homemade flour tortillas, but both thought they tasted very average. Also, they weren’t really that warm.

The service stood out the most. Our server was very attentive and kept the drinks full. The was delicious and I enjoyed the music-especially since it wasn’t super loud.

Delicious food at ridiculously good prices service was fast and very friendly. We had a picky eater in our midst and they thought the nachos were too spicy (they weren’t very spicy but even a spice level of 1 was too high foe this person!). Our waiter was very gracious about exchanging the nachos for a different meal at no cost to us, which was unneccessary but extremely kind. We’ve gone here many times and always had excellent food and service.

Service was not good as waiter didn’t seem to understand English. I asked for no tomatoes, no green peppers, but to add jalapenos. Needless to say it came with green peppers and a little tomatoes. By this time we had waited too long. The chicken was very rubbery and the wife’s and mother’s tortillas were tough. Trying to explain to the waiter was not happening as he obviously didn’t understand what we were saying. The wife’s stomach was upset a few hours of her eating.

Got the nachos to go. They were 15 dollars and every chip was completely soggy and the steak was tough/chewy. Three stars because service and their cheese enchiladas are good.

Every Mexican restaurant has pretty much the same things. El Kanelo’s stands out, it’s consistently excellent and the staff are always in top form at least every time I have been there. I think it’s a top notch restaurant all the way around.

Very happily impressed with our discovery in tiny Hugo, OK. Excellent Mexican food and incredibly fast service. I grew up 25 years in New Mexico and have spent 40 years in Texas. I know Mexican food and this is some of the best. The chili rellenos are the best I have had in over a decade. Everything including the salsa was great. Highly recommend and we will be back. Extra plus is they are open on Sunday when we are often in Hugo.
