If you’re expecting this to be a typical roadside Maine clam shack, you’ll be disappointed. But you’ll be delighted to discover that The Clam Bar deserves a spot atop Portland’s renowned restaurant scene. Great menu, incredibly creative, flavorful food, and service that some restaurants three years — not three weeks — in business would die for. Congrats to owners and crew for creating something truly original and enjoyable.

The menu at The Clam Bar features a variety of seafood dishes, including fried clams, lobster rolls, fish and chips, and steamers. The seafood is all sourced locally, and the restaurant is known for its fresh, delicious food.

We sampled oysters, clam fritters, tuna, clam chowder. All were fresh, oil was fresh for fritters (not too bread with a good tartar) and the chowder with fennel was hot and tasty. The croutons in the soup were unnecessary. The atmosphere is casual , outside seating or a small covered dining area. The service is friendly and positive. Recommended.

What a great new place, I had the fried clams and they ere the best I’ve had in years. Perfectly fried, crisp and fresh. The clam chowder is chock full of clams and the oysters were fresh and delicious. The entire staff is very friendly, it’s rare you can eat in Portland and not get attitude, strongly recommend

I went to the Clam Bar for clam chowder at lunch time, based on a recommendation from a daughter. Outdoor seating is provided with view of working waterfront across the street. I ordered the chowder and found a seat. It took a long time to get the chowder, despite there only being one other couple there. The Clam chowder was a different style than I’m used to. I base my evaluation on flavor, consistency and the ratio (the ratio of clams to potatoes – the higher the better). The clams were plentiful, tender with good flavor. There was, however, a lot of bacon too. I prefer my chowder without bacon. Some of the bacon was in large pieces so it competed with, and masked the clams. All of the bacon gave the chowder a greasy consistency. While not my favorite chowder, it showed how recipes differ and offer different things for different people.

Was apparently the third customer at the newly opened site on the far southern end of Commercial Ave. Had fried clams, steamers, and fish and chips. All were excellent, and the fried fish was the best I’ve ever had. Service was great and we loved the outdoor seating. The fact that there are a coffee shack and beer shack steps away doesn’t hurt, either. This place is totally worth a stop, especially if you want to get away from the downtown Portland craziness for a few moments and just enjoy your food with a nice view of the river.

I visited Portland last week from Atlanta, GA, and ate at the Clam Bar with friends. The food was amazing, the fried clams and the mussels were great! It was so good we ate there twice in our week visit! We were finished eating and one of the employees came running to the car. I had left behind my purse! We were flying out the next day, so had I would have lost my ID and not been able to make the flight. They totally rescued my vacation!

I was excited and ended up a little disappointed. The lobster wasn’t on the menu. Their oysters were the most expensive we’ve seen around town and generally they charge as much as in restaurants without the service.

Happened upon this gem on the way through Portland. Fried clams and fish and chips were delicious, atmosphere was lovely, service was friendly and very welcoming to our dog. Would have loved to be able to stay for drinks!

Our experience was totally ruined when two employees starting smoking nearby the tables. Otherwise, the food was decent, but overpriced for the value (inclusive of portion and quality). Service was varied, but we had one outstanding and attentive staff-member. (Due to their model, you engage with numerous people over the course of your visit as opposed to having one dedicated human.) It’s a bit loud due to the nearby road as well, but that’s unavoidable.
