Great Southern fare done in unique ways. Maybe a touch of salt on the pasta raviolo, but all good. I will say the bourbon drinks were a bit of a disappointing experience. The Old Fashioned tasted off and the tons of icecubes and not one block was a miss. My Sazerac was good, but it felt like it needed more stirring. Something to consider is upping the bourbon drink experience. Maybe some egg white drinks? Cool ice to put in. Service was wonderful. It was a tad loud. Older buildings do that. Great ambiance.

This was our second time in this restaurant and we were just as pleased with this experience as the last. The food was outstanding, with creative twists on classic dishes. The service up to par. Would eat there again in a heartbeat.

We made our first trip to Oxford for a birthday celebration and my husband made sure we had dinner reservations at City Grocery. After having had an excellent meal the night before at another local restaurant we were especially excited to try City Grocery given it’s outstanding reviews. Sadly, very little of the hype lived up to our expectations. Our reservation was fairly early in the evening so the restaurant was still quiet enough that we could hear the music which should have been out first indication that things weren’t going to be what we expected – it was bar music, definitely not fine dining. The lighting was so low, I and other diners had to resort to the flashlights on our phones to read the menu. Our drinks and peach salad were lovely, if over priced. I will say the trout dish was delicious, well prepared and flavorful if uninspiringly presented but my husband’s chicken dish, while equally well prepared was bland and unseasoned. The blueberry hand pies and in-house ice cream we had for dessert were also disappointing, tasting like they’d been microwaved and again, with no presentation whatsoever. By this time our waitress was busy with a large party in another part of the restaurant and done with us. We were never offered coffee with dessert but kuddos to the kids that kept our water glasses filled. Thankfully we had many other wonderful experiences during our visit to Oxford and good food in other places. We’ll eagerly return to Oxford but we won’t be back to City Grocery.

Ask for Terry! He is the best waiter! He had amazing knowledge of the menu, letting us sample things we were unsure about. We went for my birthday and had the best dinner. Everything was so flavorful and beautifully presented.

My food was delicious. I ordered a salad (pic) yummy—and a pork appetizer.

Recently ate here on a Saturday night. Overall the atmosphere is fun and lively (can get noisy with a full house), the waitstaff was very attentive and knowledgeable and the food tasted good – it’s not incredible but it’s good.

I had heard SO MUCH about this restaurant that I chose it to celebrate a birthday for my wife… in shoert throughly disapointing and will NEVER return. The basic chicken dish I had was just that – individual elements all nicely cooked.. but OMG BLAND as a post WWII ration coupon British Isles meal – no seasoning, no sauce and no flavour.. but being fair, nicely (blandly) cooked. Several folks were turning on their cell phone flashlights (hint hint to the owners) to be able to read the menu print beyond the “ambient” low lighting.. waitress was oververly enthusiastic to the point of being condersendingly directive on the menu and wine list… saving grace – my wife had the trout and having tasted it my self.. it was, I have to say – – DELICIOUS. Ambient music – please play classical low level elevator music to accompliment your atmostphere – not bloody loud 1960’s era rock music, even if it be the Beatles!
