Gotta love the place. Decorated throughout with antiques from early settlers and Old West. Waitresses had cowboy hats and six guns. Had taco pizza and bacon cheeseburger pizza. Both very good. Menu had, sandwiches, appetizers, dinners, and salads as well. Service was fast and friendly. Well worth the stop.

Great food. Ordered onion rings, Rueban Sandwich w/ waffle fries and a pizza. Onion rings were homemade and served fresh with side of ranch. Were very delicious. We ordered 1/2 order which was more than enough for the three of us to share. Sandwich was typical Rueban but was good. Pizza was delicious. Thin crust with lots of toppings. Overall, excellent food and service was just as good. Worth the drive to Pleasantville.

We love going to Checkboard! Staff is always so friendly, Karen is always a hoot. Sarah is our favorite waitress and always does a wonderful job! Food is amazing every single time! 10 out of 10 recommend stopping if you are in the area!

As I have said before, they changed the menu to pizza and sandwiches, but a very small selection of dinner choices. The table was so sticky to point of disgusting. Service was good and food was somewhat ok. I got a grilled chicken sandwich, which was dry and over cooked. I only ate the steak fries. My husband got the special, which was the ham steak and baked potato and dry. Hard dinner roll. The food depends on what you order to how good it is. They are known to have good homemade onion rings, but I can’t eat very greasey food. OVERALL I DON’T REALLY LIKE TO EAT THERE BUT HUBBY CHOOSE TO EAT THERE . PEOPLE IT’S YOUR CHOICE TO TRY IT FOR YOURSELF AND YOU MIGHT FIND SOMETHING THAT YOU LIKE. GOOD LUCK ..

Food was horrible and WAY OVERPRICED! $18 for 3 chicken strips and fries with a salad that had brown lettuce. Philly cheesesteak was hard and tasted like freezer burnt cheap meat. My husband had the grinder, which were 2 cheap sausage patties with some cheap tomato sauce. My husband started gagging with the first bite. Sandwiches don’t come with fries, just a $12 disgusting sandwich. Save your time and money. You’d get better flavored food at Casey’s!

Years ago we used to eat at checkerboard restaurant in Pleasantville Iowa. The waitresses were all sweet and the food was good. We quit going four years ago because we could not stand the fact the woman who owned the place spoke very poorly to her staff right in front of the customers. Creating a hostile environment. Patrons like peace while they’re eating their food. Finally after four years we got up enough nerve to walk back in and try it again. A sweet waitress was going to seat us in the middle of the room at a table for 4. I asked if we could be set a little further away so we could hear each other talk. She said of course, sat us at a table for 4 that had an extra chair and we said thank you. While looking at the menu the owner yelled across the room at us and told us we had to move that was a table for 5 people. Please understand there was literally four tables in the restaurant that had customers seated in them. Two rooms full of empty tables and the fifth chair at our table could have been moved to any table and made into a table of five. At this point I am so embarrassed as every customer and wait staff were staring at us and looking stunned. A man in our party said are you saying the place is so full we can’t sit here? She said yes cuz it’s a table for 5. Of course we headed out the door. All the sudden she wanted us to stay. No way I could enjoy a meal there now. This breaks my heart because I want to support small towns. I do know a lot of people in town that do not come to this restaurant anymore because of how the owner behaves. And small businesses are suffering. And I’m sure you can figure out we will not come back! We went to Pella found a new restaurant George’s and the pizza was excellent. I want to encourage the staff and understand this has nothing to do with them. This solely lies on the woman whom I believe is the owner.

This was my first time here and it was absolutely amazing and delicious! The wait staff was very attentive and the owner even came out and said hello and brought us our best ever shoestring onion rings with homemade ranch! All of the food was delicious and the setting inside the restaurant makes you feel like you’re in an old western! Suggest going early as they’re only open from 4:00 to 9:00 Wednesday through Saturday and we got there at 4:30 and by 6:00 there was a wait! Highly recommend!!!
