Avalus (Travel with Trey)
I have travelled to a good number of historic inns and taverns along the East Coast so I’m always excited to try new places. Barnsboro Inn was on the list of stops and so we made the journey north to see and experience New Jersey’s oldest tavern. The bar was packed on a weekend day, which was nice to see. The dark and dingy interior had the feel of a comfy dive bar, with lots of neon and alcohol advertisements, but not so much an establishment that is interested in expressing its historic roots. We ate in the secondary bar because it was quite crowded in the main bar. The food was traditional tavern food. I saw a steak on the menu, but our waitress warned me away from it, given she said she gets complaints about its small size. Crisis averted. I decided to play it safe and go for the burger, parmesan wings, and French Onion soup. Everything was good, but I didn’t find anything remarkable. The beer list however featured local breweries and that was quite good! I walked around a little bit, and despite it being an historic property, it just didn’t feel like it carried its age well. You look for nostalgia in these instances, but instead I found a rather gaudy Christmas tree in their main dining room, and when I asked the hostess if they had anything (like a brochure) on the history of the inn, I was told they didn’t. It would be a nice touch, considering some people are interested in the age of the tavern to have this information handy, or at least to educate the staff on the finer points for history buffs like myself. I’ve ventured to a number of taverns that provide small handouts. Otherwise, the staff was friendly, and you can tell that this is a place well beloved of the local clientele and lots of regulars who knew the staff by name and vice versa.

Excellent place to stop! The history is great (oldest bar in New Jersey), the staff (Debbie) and clientele are extremely friendly, and the food was really great! I can’t resist crab cakes and these are the very best I’ve ever had (crab cake sandwich)! 5 stars all around!

Did not like the food at all with those prices with it saying fine dining on sign should definitely change that. This picture which is well done should have been medium this is what I took home

Have had a great time there. Food is great as well as the service. The only gripe I have is with one particular bartender. She doesn’t like jukebox music that she deems inappropriate. I get it, but you wouldn’t know that ahead of time. No sign anywhere pointing to this. She will turn off music you paid for with out warning or compensation. Doesn’t seem right. Especially when you’ve sat there eating and drinking while you wait for your music to play.

Great bartender, great service, great band but it stops there. Unfortunately for the first time a bad food experience. Burger was bland and freezer burnt, beers were cool not cold, chips partially stale, fish and chips over cooked. No hand towels in dispenser and not replaced entire 3 hours there. Great vibe, bad food. Hopefully this is just a quirk, will try again in the future.

You just HAVE to try this place! I like to consider myself a connoisseur when it comes to burgers, and The Carriage House Burger is at the top of my list! The staff was friendly, accommodating, and efficient. My family and I were highly impressed with the customer service! This is going to be our new spot!

Nice atmosphere, nice staff, very dog friendly. Food lacked proper seasoning which made was could have been great just so-so. Even the shrimp with orange lacked a much flavor. The mussels and lobster bisque were under seasoned, especially the white wine sauce for the mussels, did they run out of garlic? The fish and chips were fine, onion rings good French onion soup, too acidic and missing that caramelized onion flavor.

The burgers were decent but light on sauce, was able to order a bottle of wine. Service went a bit way side when a large party came in and all the servers were paying attention to them, they must split tips and thought it would be a big tip but wasn’t like we had a small bill after ordering a bottle of wine and may have ordered more if we could have gotten our waiters attention but they were so focused on the other table. It wasn’t till we were almost done that we could ask for more sauce (we actually waited a long while after our first bite trying to get our servers attention). Prob won’t go back too expensive for poor service.
