Food was good, but service and cleanliness was an issue. Flies flying in your food while you are trying to eat, dirty silverware and cups, no creamer for coffee, stuff floating in drink, and a long wait time for food. They did not try to compensate at all for any of these issues. I would go again for the food, but only with a fly swatter and my own drink.

The Cajun chicken sandwich didn’t have any cajun seasoning. Tasted awful! It was hard to chew, dry and you could tell that chicken breast was OLD!! Didn’t have any orange juice and coffee was overpriced and the owner tried to hit on us… Not going back ever!!!

I ordered biscuits and gravy, not a difficult dish to make, especially since there was only one other person in the restaurant, who already got his food (except for the SALAD he ordered, and didn’t receive till near the end of his meal). My food came out and I got excited. Good thing it was like licking a salt block. First and last time I’ll ever step foot in that establishment.

Red Rooster in Lake Station/New Chicago area… worst place I’ve ever been to. We went to breakfast there this morning. I ordered a Denver omelette, and the cook loaded it with mushrooms when it does NOT say it comes with mushrooms on the menu. We didn’t have time to sit and wait for them to remake it, so we asked the waitress to have it taken off. They also overcharged on our bill for the kids when we ordered kids French toast which was $2.50 on the menu. The bill came, and said $42 (no freaking way that was accurate) when my husband’s breakfast was $6.95 and mine was ruined so it was supposed to be taken off, and we had coffee, chocolate milk, and 2 kids French toast. The waitress and owner yelled at each other in the back about it, which we could hear through the whole restaurant. Then we went to the front to speak to the owner about the mistakes made, and he started to yell at me immediately, saying if we can’t afford to feed our kids we shouldn’t go out to eat, and of course my husband started going off at him for yelling at me, trying to explain what the mistakes were with the bill and my food. The guy just refused to understand the issues, and then told me “honey go home and cook for your kids, don’t try to scam restaurants cuz you can’t afford your kids.” I’ve never been so disrespected. He continued to yell at my husband and say we have no money and we can’t afford our kids so we shouldn’t have them. He also yelled at his waitress and cook, when they were trying to tell him what the issue was. They had brains and understood what we were saying, instead of immediately yelling at customers. A customer got up and left when the owner decided to yell at his customers, and he then started yelling at another waitress to pay the guy’s bill, like she had anything to do with why he walked out. The owner has no idea how to run a business. This place needs to be shut down.

I asked for extra grilled onions for my chopped steak and my food got cooled waiting on them. I ended up telling the lady to forget the onions it was taking to long my food was cold. She told me it was ok because the cook never even started making them for me yet. My food would have been ice cold if I would’ve waited for them.

4 stars. It’s nothing fancy, it’s just a reliable place to grab good food at a decent price. Service is variable as the wait staff comes and goes because the place isn’t busy any more. This restaurant used to be jam-packed with standing room only, and was heavily populated by smokers that lived in the border area between New Chicago and the North side of Hobart. I am a non-smoker who patronized the restaurant regularly because it was a cheap place in the neighborhood to get good food. The restaurant had a smoke-free room where I would eat, and a smoking section for the smokers. When the state imposed the smoking ban on restaurants, this restaurant immediately lost 95% of it’s customers. The quality of the food is still as good as it has always been, but the smoking ban has driven it’s customer base away. Locals no longer use the Red Rooster as a local hangout. The result is that the restaurant has been in an economic downward spiral because the smoking ban caused most of this store’s customers to stay home. What used to be a jam-packed viable restaurant is now sparsely populated with customers, and the management has to scale back the hours to make ends meet. Business is so slow that waitresses can’t make enough money to stay, so they turn over quickly. The Rooster has recently eliminated dinner, shifting to breakfast and lunch only, closing at 3 pm because they can’t afford to keep the business open all day. Now that the smoking ban is in effect I can enjoy a meal without having to smell smoke, but in all likelihood this business will go under and cease to exist solely because of legislative action. This place embodies the destructive changes that oppressive legislation brings upon businesses, and how the state’s desire to play nanny over the adult population destroys freedom of choice in the marketplace.
