We went, asked to sit at the empty bar and they said only the end seats were available. We sat We ordered I called a friend who drove down and sat around the front side as two others came in sat down at the bar. My friend ordered and our first roll arrived. As we sat and waited the other couple at the bar ordered a bunch of food from the kitchen…

Bento boxes for lunch were heavy on rice. California maki was limp and teriyaki salmon was dry and flavorless. Pricey. Great service, however…

Decided to try Niwa based on reviews. Spicy scallop hand roll, salmon sashimi, and spider & negihama rolls were good, but not great. However, sunshine roll had too much rice, crab tasted very bland, & it was rolled so loosely it completely fell apart when trying to pick it up. Biggest disappointment was the Kaarage (see pic) – looks like chicken nuggets from a fast-food place & tasted like it as well.

This restaurant is incredible!!!! They have FRESH WASABI!!!! The Nigiri is so fresh, beautiful and delicious. The Godzilla roll was packed tightly and fried to perfection, the garlic edamame was bonkers, the veggie tempura was crispy on the outside with a fresh crunch on the inside, and the gyoza had real vegetables inside. Definitely not what we were expecting from a place right next to a grocery store. I think we’ve found our new go-to sushi restaurant.

This is in the former Niwa Sushi location, but it is a dramatic improvement from the former restaurant. The space has been remodeled and cleaned up. No more TV on in the corner, but it is the menu and sushi that has improved the most. Better grade of sushi and the chef is much more talented in his skills and presentation we are now going once a week a great addition to Orinda!

Word on the street is this place has the best sushi in the area, so I had to try it. It was delicious. And the staff was so friendly. Can’t wait to come back next time I’m in the east bay!

This place is amazing! Judging from the chairs outside I thought it wasn’t going to be very good but the sushi was excellent and the portions were huge. Best sushi I’ve had in ages

My husband and I have tried many sushi restaurants, and Niwa is our favorite. The fish and seafood are super fresh and beautifully presented. The service is excellent, and you are missing out if you haven’t tried Niwa.

They seem very nice here but this is far from authentic sushi. They hand you a Chinese food menu in addition to the short and very basic sushi menu. I was hopeful because the reviews online were good but they only had one bottle of sake and either there’s something wrong with that particular bottle or it’s just a terrible sake. I could not drink any of it. Sho Chiku Bai isn’t great, but generally it isn’t undrinkable. The appetizer they gave me had so much mayonnaise on the fake crab that I couldn’t eat it. The 9 piece sashimi plate had 9 tiny pieces that were equal to about 4 regular size pieces. Reviewers said prices were reasonable: $17.95 for a Rainbow Roll is not reasonable unless you’re dining at a nice higher-end restaurant. This is a hole-in-the-wall wanna be sushi come Chinese restaurant.
