Everything looked visually great, but food was a bit average, not bad but not mind blowing either. We ordered the polenta scallops, tonkatsu ramen, tomato ramen, and the Little Italy roll. The polenta scallops and tonkatsu ramen were probably the best. Tomato ramen was good but a bit too oily. The Little Italy roll was the most disappointing, it felt kind of dry and lacking flavor. I kind of expected the vegan rolls to be like Shizen (vegan izakaya in SF) or Tane Vegan Izakaya in Hawaii, those ones were mindblowingly good.

My godson and I had a great experience at The Yasai in Little Italy. We ordered rice, miso soup, Inari pockets, a caterpillar roll, and a King Minato roll. Everything was delicious! I only want to mention that the Inari pockets are cold, which I didn’t realize and didn’t like nearly as much as the other food items.

I’ve lived in Japan a number of years, so hearing about a vegan Japanese restaurant is an oxymoron. Pretty much all Japanese food has pork, fish, and/or eggs. So, of course, I had to try Yasai. It did not disappoint.

I ordered the Trinity roll and it was delicious. I appreciate the bold ingredient and flavor combinations the menu offers. The restaurant itself is in a great location and is very chic. Service was prompt and polite. Highly recommend!

From ice cream choices (both vegan and dairy options), to the vegan food options, the manager (Billy The Goat aka just Billy) was a pleasurable experience making this restaurant a must visit! (Just don’t sit near the door during hot summer days or cold nights) as the door often times tend to get left open.

The food looked beautiful. Amazingly plated and looked really pretty. The appetizers were delicious. The bao buns were really tasty, had to take some to go. The oversized gyoza and karrago were ok, felt like both dishes were missing flavor for the size. Sushi rolls were really great to look at but weren’t as tasty as you’d expect from presentation. Overall I’d give the entire experience and taste 7/10 and I’ll give them one more try if I’m in the area again.

We really enjoyed the vegan food and service! We walked in on a busy night and were seated quickly! Because the Yasai dining room was full, we were seated in the dining room of the restaurant next door with the same owner but could order from either menu. If eating vegan food while surrounded by people eating non-vegan food is uncomfortable for you, probably safest to make a reservation.
