Classic BBQ spot. Easy stop while traveling. Never been to one of these before but I enjoyed it! I tried the build-your-own bowl. You pick a base, protein, toppings, and sauce. I opted for no sauce and just used the ones left on the table because I wasn’t sure which sauce I wanted. We also had the corn nuggets. They are one of my favorite fried appetizers and everyone enjoyed them. Our server was the best. Super attentive, even with a lot of tables. She even helped cut up food for a child at the table next to us. She was going above and beyond. Thanks for the great experience!

This surprising chain restaurant looks like a fast food joint but has full table service. The service was very good and we were very comfortable. The food was good overall. We had two combo plates and four different sides to try a bit of everything. The brisket was tender with good smoke, the chicken was juicy and the sausage had a good bite. The pork lacked seasoning but the sauce helped this. The coleslaw was sweet and we lived it, the beans were ketchup heavy but not bad. Overall, we enjoyed this very much.

The last time I had Sonny was 10 years ago in North Carolina. Let me tell you, it was just as good as I remember it! You get so much food for a good price, and refills are free. The glasses they have are huge too. I have to drink a lot when I eat, and it was great not having to ask for a refill every 2 minutes! The waitress was very friendly and helpful on what to order. She made sure to check in on us as well. I definitely will return in the future and can’t wait until that moment!

I hadn’t been to Sonny’s BBQ in a while. I went there looking forward to a great salad bar that I use to eat at in Florida. I was wrong. They don’t have salad bars no longer I was told. Then I waited 10 minutes just to get a menu. It took 25 minutes to get my order placed. Then my french fries come out cold. I asked them to make me some fresh ones and it took another 8 to 10 minutes. So if you are on a lunch break, I would recommend you not eating here because you probably won’t get your food in time to eat before you have to be back at work. It was a dirty place too. The 2 young folks cooking in the back were so not caring about anything. They were busy entertaining one another. I won’t ever return to that store.

Update: It had been a few months since we tried Sonny’s so we tried to give them another shot. That was a mistake. We were there for an hour and a half and most of it was spent waiting. We waited to be seated because there wasn’t a hostess. A waitress sat us and took our drink order but those took about ten minutes to arrive. Once we ordered it took over thirty minutes for our food to arrive. A table came and sat down while we were waiting and they got their food even before we received ours. When it did arrive the meat on neither plate was warm. It felt like it hadn’t even been heated. There was also hardly any breading on the Okra. You could see the green of the okra almost completely. One positive was that the waitress was very nice and genuine. We will be making the drive to the Richmond location from now on.

I had the Build Your Bowl selecting from a nice variety of items and is a delicious economical meal. The server was a trainee and did an excellent job, was attentive without intrusive, had a good knowledge of the menu. Seating is comfortable and background music at a low level to have conversation.

Poor —or below. You decide:Start with “snippy” waitress… Followed by $8.00 Cesar salad the size of avg side salad. Then. Add decaying, rotten romaine, second salad delivered… Obviously from same bag.. mgr asked what wrong as two salad’s in front of him with rotten romaine…. The tone and posture presentation was. Shut up don’t complain. Despite having to express how distasteful the salad was.. yet. Reluctant to remove from bill and ate none of either. 2. Pork cold fatty. Slaw: on the three day old flavor. Fries greasy. Cold. Obviously reheated… The bun was good…. Too many good choices out there to waste time and money, secondary, humiliation to consumer is simply a bad business model.. finally. A fight broke out in the kitchen.. something about a microwave…… My opinion: well. I prefer not to be rude.. you decide….
