We eat here at least once a month, but tonight was a disaster. We waited forever for 2 kids chicken fingers and fries. All other food was brought out without the chicken fingers. Was told they forgot to drop them. Then was told that they had dropped them on the floor and had to cook more. Everyone else had their food for over 20 minutes while the children at our table waited for their chicken fingers and fries. When we finally got the kids meals, one of our kids had to take hers home because she didn’t want to eat at this point from waiting so long. I was disappointed in the size of the large jumbo shrimp plate, especially for $20. Maybe 10 medium sized shrimp on my plate. Hard to get refills on drinks. Had to ask waitress for things several times before receiving them. We will be back, but hope it gets better in the future.

Best seafood in town but this particular evening I ordered a steak. A lot of folks have raved on and on about how good their steaks are so I thought I’d try it myself. In my opinion, I’ve had better, so I don’t think I’ll get a steak from there again. I’ll stick to the seafood. The staff seemed to not have it together as far as getting foods to the right customers and may be that’s what happened to my steak. I may ha e gotten someone else’s? Not long after we began eating, a server came up to our table and noticed we were eating steaks and she had 2 steaks in hand ready to serve us and we were like “ma’am we’ve already gotten our food”. I noticed that happening several times with servers coming out with plates of food and going up to tables asking folks if they got this or that. Maybe the need to #their tables. That could help with all that unnecessary confusion and servers aren’t carring plates if food from table to table. I will go back but not for a steak.

This was our first experience at this restaurant. We have heard from plenty of people that they had the best steak but I wasn’t expecting the juicy deliciousness slab of meat that we were served. It was so tender and normally A1 is a must, but this time it would have been an insult to use I also got the combo of flounder and shrimp. I underestimated the portion sizes. I easily have enough for a whole other meal or maybe 2. Now the frosting on the cake was our server. Shelia. She was so knowledgeable and friendly. Our teas were always filled. The wait time seemed reduced to almost nothing with the salads, hush puppies and amazing conversation. She worked so efficiently and made sure we had everything we needed. She seemed to really care about her customers and I feel like her goal was to put a smile on each customers face. 10/10 food. 10/10 customer service. 10/10 on our first experience. Will be coming back and will be special requesting her again!!!

I tried this place for my first time. Actually I could smell the kitchen cooking smells outside and it was appetizing. I had the small portion of Alaskan whitefish with fries and white coleslaw. The food was good. This place is the Albemarle location of Jay’s Seafood. It has a similar atmosphere and clientele. It’s a cash only place.

I had the scallops and oyster combo, what a delight. So enjoyable. The fries were just warm and soggy. They don’t sell alcohol which was a pitty, I love a beer with my seafood so water had to suffice. Teri my wonderful wife had the grilled chicken salad which she enjoyed. They do not take any cards, cash or checks only so be aware if you plan to visit.

Jay’s Downtowner is located in Albemarle, NC just off NC Hwy 24/27. If you like fried seafood this is your place. I appreciate the fact that this business is successful and has been for many, many years, but it’s not my kind of dining establishment. Jay’s has a great customer base and they will be open for many years to come. Tonight the shrimp was greasy, but the catfish was wonderful. Skip the ribeye as it is marinated and extremely salty and the toughest piece of steak I have ever attempted to eat. Skip the cole slaw and opt for an iceberg salad or the red slaw. Baked potatoes were scorching hot and tasty – of course the hushpuppies were delicious. The service was great and accurate! This place has really neat historical pictures and memorabilia adorning the walls. Stop in and check out Jay’s Downtowner…you may enjoy what they have on the menu. Enjoy!

The food was great! The staff was very friendly! I tried the whitefish plate and I’m glad I didn’t get the all you can eat because even on the small plate it was enough to bring home. The hush puppies are also very good.
