In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. If you suffer from arkoudaphobia (the fear of bears) this isn’t your scene. The decor is all about the bears of western North America: brown, black, grizzly. The food is slanted toward breakfast fare. Serving portions are plentiful. My food came out lukewarm, though.

The food is decent and they are pretty fast for takeout orders. However ordering any extras is a little sad. Adding fruit and whipped cream is currently $2.69 and I received a strawberry and a 1/3 full small cup of whipped cream. Now I know good whipped cream melts but it was completely clean for most of the cup so I know that’s all I got. I may go again in the future but there won’t be any extras added to anything.

I had a nice experience at this diner! It feels very warm and welcoming. The staff is super friendly, great service. I got the cheddar bacon burger and that it was slightly above average. The fries however were delicious. Perfectly crunchy! The food wasn’t phenomenal, but rather, on par with what you’d expect from a nice family diner. Few complaints!

We went to this location for breakfast this past weekend. The server, Tucker let us know he is still new and learning. Totally understandable. He struggled a little but not so much that it was an issue. He was friendly, and that made up for it. The food was good and took a little bit to get to us but they were super busy so we understood. Not a big deal. My one complaint is the Hispanic lady (and I don’t mean that on a racist manner at all) that maybe could have been the manager, standing behind the counter where the food comes out, yelling so loud at the cooks in the back that we couldn’t even have a conversation over her yelling. It was Non-stop. The entire hour and a half we were there! By the time we were finished with our meals, we were beyond ready to get out of there. I can only imagine how the staff felt with her constant yelling. Yes, they were busy, I’m sure is was stressful but to stand there and yell continuously is unacceptable. If there was an issue, she should have walked in the back and discussed it with the necessary employees. No employee deserves to be treated like that!
