I’ll give this place 10 stars if that’s an option – the food is absolutely the BEST. I tried lots of gumbo places and this is the one I would absolutely go back to if I’m in the area. Gumbo sausage, bumblebee stew, Sriracha chicken, voodoo chicken….they are all super tasty. And the staff is also the best staff ever, super friendly and even gave us suggestions for the area.

I love Cajun food as much as the next person so as far as coming here to get my fixing I would say that they’re alright. I got the sausage gumbo and the red hot tacos. Gumbo was okay to say the least. It was very watery and soupy & I just wasn’t a fan of the sausage which made me glad I didn’t order more cause I didn’t know if I’d like it or not. However I have to say the seasonings and spices are there, it’s just very subtle so it hits a lot more after you eat it. The red hot tacos on the other hand were pretty good. They tasted like what they are called, if you had red hot’s sauce before but I was kind of disappointed when they didn’t have any of the toppings they said they were to include like sour cream or jalapenos. Also I wished they’d seasoned the chicken breast as well or a lot more cause the chicken without any of the red hot sauce tasted bland by itself but the portions are good so I guess it was fair. I’ll probably come back and try the jambalaya but it’s too soon for me to say they’re up there as Louisville’s best Cajun restaurant.

We were looking for something different for a lunch date and my husband fought hard for this place and I’m so glad he did. Service was friendly and great. We ordered drunken chicken and the voodoo chicken with the shrimp toast and root beers. We are so full, happy and will be back for that drunken chicken.

J Gumbos is delicious… give it a try you won’t regret it! They will let you sample any of their dishes, that way you know if you like it! The Bourbon Street Chicken is the best! My son likes hot & spicy and he gets the Vodoo Chicken Nachos. Give it a shot… something different from a hamburger, steak, fried chicken, etc…

I have been going to J gumbo for sometime. I love the food but I’m deciding not to go back anymore because how the manager was treating the employees. I don’t believe the employees should be treated like dirt when I’ve been there the employees have gone above and beyond to help the customers, but just recently I was there and I believe it was the manager who was talking down to the employees. I had to ask them toys who that person was after he left. They were nervous to even give me his name. He seemed a little obnoxious, and may be under some kind of influence , but I don’t plan to go back anymore due to that manager treating the employees so harshly I don’t even know what the employees did but he really dug into them over and over again and I don’t believe anybody should be treated like that no matter how much you are paying them or the lack of paying them

My husband and I recently stayed in the area while caring for a sick family member. We tried J. Gumbo’s because it was close to our Air BnB. We were not disappointed. During our repeat visits over several days we tried everything from the jambalaya to the gumbo, and it was all yummy. And the bread pudding! Oh my! Prices were reasonable for the quality of food we got. We will definitely look forward to eating at J. Gumbo’s again when we are back in town.

Great food and portion sizes. Recommend the drunken chicken over rice. The service was great as the employee was very friendly and answered all the questions we had on the menu. He even went so far as allowing us to taste a couple of the dishes before we made our choice. Positive experience.

Food was really really good. Fresh and flavorful. However, the Hospitality of Penny, was amazing! She allowed us to try numerous dishes and took the time to explain each. Doing all this while being the solo cook/service. Honey sriracha chicken and drunken chicken are great choices! We will definitely be back.

Staff was nice, however there were 2 things that ruined our lunch. Etoufee tasted too artificial and was súper thick. We asked for outdoor seating and… there was a dead small animal with Tail in the middle of the front terrace.
