So met a friend for lunch over the weekend and gave Sushi Japan a try. For a 230pm on Sunday in downtown Birmingham it was surprisingly empty, so I would say the atmosphere was great! Very simple and quaint place. The food was good. Not outstanding, but good. The menu does veer more towards Korean than Japan and they have an extremely limited sushi selection which was surprising given the name of the restaurant. I didn’t have a taste for sushi (SHOCKED) and they really didn’t have any that tickled my fancy, so I opted for a few appetizers. Shrimp tempora, spring rolls, Korean Fried Chicken, fried pot stickers and Wonton soup. Everything was…ok. These seem like simple basic choices and you wonder how they could be better, but I have had WAY better for all of these choices, sans the Wonton Soup. I would go back JUST for the soup as long as they agree to add a couple more Wonton because I was devastated when both were gone! The broth was amazing and I loved having the veggies and the thin noodles in it as well. The Wontons were veggie instead of pork filled which I liked! The tempora, spring rolls and pot stickers were pretty basic. Definitely have had better, but the Korean Fried Chicken was the real let down. Honestly there was no different than some boneless wings in a sweet bbq sauce from Buffalo wild wings or KFC. That menu item could definitely use some work. In all, I won’t say it is a place where I would go “hey let’s go back to Sushi Japan” but I would if I want a great bowl of soup and definitely wouldn’t sneer if it was my only option for a place to eat. Check it out, you may feel differently!

One of the best! Sushi Japan has quality fish and fantastic presentation. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food tasted so good that we came back the very next day for more! We couldn’t stop thinking about how good and fresh everything tasted.

This place hit on everything. Every appetizer and every roll was amazing. Had probably the best sushi roll I’ve ever had here. I highly recommend it here and hope they can get some bigger influx of customers.

Great experience, great food. Gluten free options are listed on the menu and they have tamari soy sauce for an extra dollar (that was a bit annoying as I didn’t Even finish the full container they gave me). Restaurant atmosphere was pleasant, clean, would definitely go back!

We had the scallop hokkaiyaki, Japanese bacon, calamari roll and bibimbap. Though the hokkaiyaki was different from what I had seen in the picture, they were good especially we liked the bibimbap with beef. But the service was not very good. The place was not crowded at all but they didn’t pay much attention to us.

Great place with very nice vegan options. (Not marked on the menu, but the servers know what’s in the dishes to help make the selections). Feels like a family run place with the warmth that comes with it.
