a great date place. i would not recommend the fixed menu, and it’s too expensive for what you get and the staff checkout on your table. but it did give me the opportunity to taste the amazing aged beef. sirloin, which was to die for. if i go back, i would love to try the watermelon salad, lamb pitta, and clams with saffron spaghetti. also, the interior is cool, but dark lighting makes it for a very intimate setting.

Oh my goodness, folks, let me tell you about my recent 5-star experience at Opal in Washington DC! From the moment I walked in, I was blown away by the chic and cozy vibes that immediately set the mood for a top-notch meal.

Atmospheric–with a great bread and honey butter appetizer!–but a bit of an underwhelming menu at higher-end prices.

A friend and I went here for a weekend brunch. We were seated on the second floor, which seemed to be a family area. It was relatively crowded, but the service was on time, not fast, not slow. I ordered their Simple brunch, where I had to choose a starter, an entree, and a drink out of a limited selection. My friend ordered the steak. My meal began with pastry (I don’t remember the name, but it had pistachios) and hot coffee, and for my entree I chose the salmon GRAVLAX mezze. My favorite part of the meal was the pastry, but I wish it was served as dessert. The main meal however was kind of bland and I didn’t see the point of serving it in separate containers. The steak my friend had was good though, so maybe entrees are hit or miss. Overall, the experience was okay, and I liked the restaurant’s bright colors and clean design, but it somehow lacked coziness.

Our server, Tim was amazing and took us on a food journey with the simple supper menu to taste much of what Opal has to offer. I was out celebrating my friend’s PhD graduation – 9 long years of school work while working a full-time job. This was just the right reward and celebration. It felt special and Tim and our hostess both acknowledged the new Dr’s accomplishment, making it an unforgettable experience. Thank you for making it extra special! They also gave us complementary champagne and a generous slice of complementary key lime pie as another congratulatory gesture. We just felt so cared for and looked after. It was more than a meal, it was an experience. You filled us with gratitude.

I went here to celebrate after my hooding ceremony and cannot think of a better way to end the day. Tim was our server and took great care of us. I enjoyed almost everything on the prix fixe menu with the exception of the croquette which lacked flavor. Both the scallop and rockfish mains were delicious. But what would have been a good night was set apart by how nice Tim was. I really felt taken care of and he made it a point to congratulate me on my accomplishment. Everything about the experience left me in an even better mood than when I came in, which is the best compliment I can give.

Opal is a true gem in the crown of the DC restaurants. Not only is their food delicious, their service excellent, their staff genuine and friendly, their decor and vibe welcoming but they are also amazing at events. We just hosted a dinner for a dear friend’s book party and it was a smashing success. Teodora and their events team are wonderful to work with, our leader server Elvis and his team were excellent and engaged and the food was so fantastic. I am so delighted they have opened here in Chevy Chase DC and will be hosting more events with them in the future.

If you are looking for a nice casual West coast kind of restaurant in DC then Opal is the one for you. We ordered Agnolotti, wood oven bread and lamb pita as appetizers paired with Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. For the main course we had rockfish and steak. While Agnolotti was a great choice, I think the bread and lamb pita was a pass. The rock fish and the steak was a B plus. Chocolate mousse was a great dessert to end the meal. I would go back again if Opal can include more dishes to their menu. But I am glad I visited the restaurant. A must go!!

We were in town for our daughter’s college graduation and came in for an early weekday dinner while she had other plans. One of the best meals we have had in recent years. We both had the tasting menu. The starting snacks (avocado tostada, spanakopita and sunchoke veloute) were all outstanding, especially the flavorful, creamy veloute with a nice crunch added by the toasted hazelnuts. The main courses we chose were equally outstanding, the ham melted in your mouth and the rockfish was perfectly cooked with a nice crispy skin. Tem was our server and he was personable and attentive. We hope we have the opportunity to come back.

We had a great experience at Opal this past weekend. We reserved the private upstairs for a baby shower for ~25 people and it was perfect. The service was wonderful and the food was delicious (and with VERY generous portions). Importantly, we were able to enjoy the space for the full brunch service, allowing plenty of time for our event. The space itself is beautiful which required very few extra decorations – we just brought in some balloons and a few small flower arrangements, nothing else needed! It was so nice to have the full event taken care of by Opal and their lovely staff. Highly recommend this restaurant for private events. You won’t regret it!
