This place is a gem! Try the glazed salmon on Fridays – it’s amazing. The chicken & dumplings soup and shrimp & grits are scrumptious. When people are passionate about what they do and have the experience to back it up, great things (and food) happen. Great staff. Wonderful people. Family-owned and operated. I’ve been at Carmi’s on Carson several times and always enjoyed it. Today I tried the express location on Federal and I wish I came sooner. I enjoyed the rib dinner with honey mustard sauce, tender and delicious! My side was mac n cheese and I liked how moist n’ cheesy it was. It came with a piece of cornbread all for about $12 – The cashier was nice and friendly; I will be back!

2 stars because the food isn’t terrible. BUT, there must be different cooks at this location not trained the same way as the others at the main location on Carson street. The Mac n cheese here is very inconsistent. If time only allows you to stop at the express location then go for it. I definitely wouldn’t recommend it. Also, apparently this location needs to use smaller containers for the sides….(photo attached)

Best take out soul food in the burgh. Carleen and Mike are the best and between them and their staff they make you feel welcomed like family at all their locations. Everything is amazing. The chicken and waffles are killer. The specials keep it fresh and the ingredients are always fresh and delicious. Made and served with love. A Northside and Pittsburgh institution.

I was excited to try their food after hearing some Northside neighbors rave about it. I wish I had a good review to share. The fried chicken tasted like dirty fryer oil and was over cooked. The Mac n cheese had zero flavor. And the cooked cabbage was so full of garlic that I couldn’t eat it. I hope that this was just a one-off experience and will try them again.

I’ve ordered at Carmi express twice on Federal Street and the food was terrible.. I ordered a fish meal pickup when I got home I couldn’t believe what I saw my fish was drenched in some type of red sauce and wrapped in aluminum foil Mac and cheese was old tasted outdated then I gave them another chance ordered fried chicken and that didn’t taste good I don’t believe they are the same as Carson street? Which is the bomb …I called and asked if the foods on the Northside is already prepared early and she said yes ..you can get sick because the food sat for some hours then served? I don’t think so ..I’m never going there again it will be Carson street only. Thank you

The smoked wings, ribs, cabbage, potato salad, pasta salad and cornbread were delicious! My husband and I shared the meal, and we still have leftovers for lunch tomorrow! The banana pudding could use a few more vanilla wafers, but it was still good.

Carmi came to the Northside around the same time I did (9 yrs) and they’ve been my favorite ever since. It’s great to have a new location here where I can get their delicious stuff when I don’t necessarily have the time to wait. Best greens I’ve ever had!
