Excellent and highly authentic Shanghainese cuisine. Highly highly recommend the pan fried fish. It is so crispy and flavorful and definitely the highlight of the meal. Every dish was very authentic and yummy. The pan fried buns were very juicy, very delicious. They were fried with the top side down in authentic fashion. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Pretty speedy and good service too.

Their portions are big. I got spring rolls and Kung pao chicken. Chicken came with rice. The food is on the mild side. Overall, it’s decent.

The food is not as authentic as other Shanghai restaurants, and this place is quite pricey.

I would give zero star if I could. My 82-yo mother and 9 of her friends went to Chef Zhao Kitchen in Palo Alto, CA on Sunday 8/20/2023. They do not go out often, so this was a special occasion for these friends who are all in their 80s. They ordered a total of 11 dishes, all of them were so salty to the point of being uneatable. They notified the wait staff immediately after tasting the first dish when it arrived and asked not to add too much salt for the next ones. Their requests were completely ignored even after repeated pleads. They finally had to get extra pots of hot tea to wash the food to make it less salty in order to eat. Some of the ribs and pork dishes were NOT fresh and tasted funny. It was a horrible experience, especially after paying an average $28 per person. It is ridiculously overpriced with unprofessional attitude and service, and the worst Chinese food ever. This restaurant just lost 10 customers plus all their families and friends.

Overall, the food was good and service is quick. Very authentic Shanghai food, especially recommend 生煎包 and 响油鳝糊. The wonton was okay.

Delicious! My parents were visiting and they are tough to please with Chinese food. We all loved this restaurant. Every dish was so good that we overate! We ordered: 1/ whole fish with sweet and sour sauce, 2/ Dong Po Pork, 3/ Special fish gluten, 4/ Preserved vegetable rice cake, and 5/ Osmanthus mini rice ball soup. Mmmmm….

Chef Zhao’s restaurant is a must-visit for any foodie! The water eel with soy sauce glaze was one of the most delicious dishes I’ve ever had – the flavors were perfectly balanced and the eel was cooked to perfection. The deep fried pork ribs were also a hit – they were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The smoked fish was a nice surprise – it had a great smoky flavor that complemented the other dishes perfectly. The service was also top-notch – our server was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Overall, I would give Chef Zhao’s restaurant a solid five stars and highly recommend it to anyone looking for delicious food and great service.

We ordered takeouts once a month and the food is usually ok. The taste is 3.5 out of 5 I would rate, but with the limited options around Palo Alto, I’d say we are quite loyal to the restaurant.

They have Shanghai traditional dishes. The steamed buns and fried buns are just ok. The fried buns skins were not crispy and were too thick. Service was fast and price was reasonable.
