About James Hook & Co

In 1925, our Grandfather, James Hook and his three sons, Edward, James and Alfred, began trucking their daily lobster catch from Maine and Canada down to the fish piers located on Boston’s waterfront. Each day, the lobsters were sold by the Hook Family directly to the owners of Boston’s finest lobster restaurants. As the desire for lobsters increased, restaurants throughout the entire New England area were coming to Boston to purchase the fresh lobsters from the Hook Family, located at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Northern Avenue.

Waterfront shanty offering live lobsters plus prepared shellfish fare for takeout. Based on 3 reviews, the restaurant has received a rating of 4.5 stars. Price $$

Located by the waterfront, the ambiance was perfect for a relaxing evening. As I sat down and took in the view, I knew I was in for a treat.

We didn’t eat at the actual restaurant. Instead we stopped at their tiny Shack on the street corner. Had the crab cake, lobster roll sandwich and clam chowder. I will say it was All definitely delicious. $40 lobster sandwich was definitely not cheap, but was good and served w/plenty lobster. Overall a cute place to just sit outside and rest between sightseeing.

We heard this place so much but little be disappointed. First of all, they only have outdoor seating area without A/C during summer time it’s not really fun to enjoy the dining experience. The lobster roll bread tastes dry. I was expecting butter roll and it should be grilled little be to have perfect crust but it’s not. The cole slaw does not taste fresh, it was sitting in the fridge for a while. All seafood resale fresh and they do have lots of lobsters. However, I expect the dining experience to be better with its price.

Mayo lobster roll is better than the butter one imo, clam chowder is good. Overall more on the average side and feels more like a tourist spot. Skippable and wouldn’t go out of the way to try. Parking was impossible to find, they have a few spots in the back but that’s it. Also tried the crab roll, crab cake and lobster bisque, plus a hot dog for the kids and they were all just alright… skippable too.

The lobster roll came with plenty of lobster, large chunks of lobster, and butter to pore over the top. The bun was crispy and the potato salad was fresh.

$40 for an OK lobster roll with watered down butter and $8 for a can of beer and they wouldn’t give me a glass of water. Corn/shrimp chowder was good. For this price, they should have real toilets, not smelly porta-potties. It was cool today – I wouldn’t want to use them when it gets hot.

Delicious and fresh! Definitely worth the wait and limited seating options. Staff is friendly. Very limited seating indoors. It was cold and rainy so we made it work 🙂 so glad we gave it a try. Both options were great – mayo or butter for the lobster roll

Decent lobster roll with quick service, the bisque is meh. Plenty of seats available. Reminder: Roll with Butter is warm and with mayo is cold

I recommend the lobster rolls or lobster salad, the lobster bisque was alright, could be improved. I have also bought fresh live lobster from this place before, which I also recommend. There is free parking available in the back, be sure to look at the signs since there are some spots reserved for government parking.
