Willie Jewell Daniels was a 16-year-old girl with no home and no means. The Adeeb Family rescued Daniels from the streets of Jacksonville and offered her a job at their legendary Green Turtle Restaurant and later, Bono’s Pit Bar-B-Q in Jacksonville, Florida. As she went to work in their family restaurants, she quickly proved that she could cook almost anything and commanded respect in the kitchen. They soon discovered an amazing lady who would change their lives forever. Not only was Willie Jewell an exceptional cook, but she had a sharp wit and an immeasurable heart.

I ordered St Louis ribs and pulled pork dinner to take home. The ribs I had to throw out. They were burnt and discussing. The pull pork portion was kid size. Very disappointed for a $20 meal. Guess if you get it to-go no sees it until it is too late to complain. I used to come here a lot before it started going downhill.

“smoked” turkey was mediocre, was rubbery and might as well have come out of a grocery deli. Pulled pork had chunks of fat and had little smoked flavor. Could have used some acid to break down the tough meat. Cole slaw was crunchy but the dressing lacked flavor.

Fabulous BBQ! Pork, brisket, turkey, chicken — it’s all delicious. The sweet potato fries, fried corn, corn bread, etc. (all the sides) are great too. Only complaint is the portions are definitely starting to decrease- especially the salads. Always really clean and great atmosphere.

Gross and not authentic BBQ at all. I first ordered the chicken and they didn’t even have any. Then I ordered the brisket and it was such a tiny portion and chopped up which was strange. It had a lot of fat. The BBQ sauce was disgusting. The oils had separated and tasted like mustard. The waitress was loud and talking with the cook a lot and let the orders sit under the heat lamp a long time. It’s just nasty food!!

Good BBQ from a chain? Yes! WJ’s definitely “punches above its weight”, at least at this location (which is supposedly the only one located in the North). I ordered a full rack of ribs to go and was surprised by the quality and portion size. Nice smoke ring – check! Fall off the bone tender – check; though I prefer a bit firmer myself, they were very tender without the bones pulling completely out (which likely means they don’t steam them, or at least only minimally as a finishing step). Good dry rub ‘bark’ -check! Even the house hickory sauce was on point.

The food is awesome. I got brisk and sausages. Green beans and sweet potatoe fries. My granddaughter a pulled pork sandwich and my daughter fried chicken salad and we also got fried okra. The place is amazing. You really should treat yourself and go there sometime.

This was the first time we ordered from here and honestly it will probably be the last there was nothing that would make me want to order from here again. We had the St. Louis Ribs they were render but very small , we had the baked beans they were probably the best thing we ate. We are huge corn bread lovers so we bought extra to be highly disappointed, it didn’t taste like corn bread at all just a pasty blah taste! I wanted to like this place so I wouldn’t have to drive to KC’s Rib Shack but there is just nothing I would go back for.

My husband and I will be back to try the rest of the menu. It was good for a local BBQ restaurant. Service had a great attitude and food was not salty and just the right of taste to go with their spicy sauce.
