Anjappar Chettinad Restaurant
Over 50 years ago Anjappar began as a local Chettinad restaurant in the Chennai area, currently they operate in 70 locations in both Indian and several countries around the world.
Anjappar offers a well-rounded South Indian menu with special focus on the Chettinad style preparations. The cuisine is uncommonly subtle and aromatic, a heritage of Chettiar participation in the centuries-old spice trade, the global import and export of pungent seeds, fruits and barks from places like Cochin and Penang, the Banda Islands, Arab ports in the Straits of Hormuz. The cuisine is based on staples of south Indian cooking like coconut, rice and legumes.

We ordered the veg thalli. The taste of the items on the plate were quite good. The veg Khurma was very nice with the right spices of Chettinad cuisine. Their chappatti is oily like many south Indian restaurants. I wish the veg porriyal was something different than potatoes. But the potato porriyal was tasty and very similar to South homemade potato porriyal.

A few years ago, when Anjappar first opened its doors, the cuisine was truly delightful. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a noticeable decline in both the flavor of the food and the quality of service. The once excellent dining experience seemed to have lost its touch. Nevertheless, in a recent visit, I was pleased to find that Anjappar has successfully regained its initial high standards. The flavors transported me back to the authentic taste of Chennai, and it’s evident that they have worked to restore their former glory. Actually, I’ve enjoyed eating there many times in the last two weeks.

This is not about the food or service, it is about the atmosphere. We are visiting Disney park with kids and wanted to try South Indian food. The moment we stepped into the place, we all wanted to come out. The place stinks with smell from the washroom. We tried to sit in the other side, still it was the same. We told the staff and came out immediately.

I’m from Coimbatore actually. All the dishes, it took me to my home town. Very good ones. One thing was they served me NOT a HOT briyani but taste was ok one. Otherwise it was fantastic ones.
