The service is always pleasant. Food is great always seasoned well and it doesn’t take them long to bring it out after you order. Red kool-aid is always sweeter than the grape somehow. Macaroni and cheese is not the greatest I’ve had but it’s OK. The other sides pictured are pretty good though. Portions are big enough to share depending on what you get. The neckbones pictured below as you can see fill up your whole plate and surprisingly have a great amount of meat on them. Fish/shrimp is always a good option to get its always cooked perfectly golden brown and flavorful. Ask for the Sock it To Me cake warmed up you won’t regret it. Also the banana pudding is very good also.

I’m from Texas, so I was a little skeptical about Californian Soul food . I must admit this place is really good, The grape kool-aide was very refreshing. I will be returning to try more of their dishes.

I ordered 2 meatloaf 1 with gravy and 1 with red sauce, both amazing. Tried a bite of catfish from another in our party, so good! Will definitely get that next time and I’m not much of a fish lover! Will definitely be back! A wonderful place for food comfort food!

We ordered two meatloaf dinners with mashed potatoes and greens. It may have been an unusual occurrence, but there was a lot of gristle in the meatloaf…so much that I couldn’t eat it. The greens could have benefitted by a longer cooking time with some ham hocks (they were a little bitter). Peach cobbler was good. We’ll try this restaurant again, but order something other than meatloaf.

Ummmm…. I don’t know how to start this. I drag my wife around Bakersfield all the time getting her to try new things. This visit was random. We were going to go get mexican food this morning and I asked her if she wanted to try Mom’s. It was perfect timing because they just opened up. Now just a background I’m from the beautiful state of Virginia and I grew up eating some of the most mouth watering food cooked by my amazing grandmother. When I moved out here I always said when I find a place that served fried cabbage I would need to go see what’s up. Just by chance today was the day. I have a subtle southern accent and after the meal this s#%t had me speaking like Colonel Sanders. Now I will never say this place is better than my grandmas cooking…..but, it comes close. This definitely kept a smile on my face the whole time I was in my seat. Thank you for bringing back memories of my grandmother Mom’s House. I will be back. Things I took home to stuff my face with peach cobbler, catfish and Mac and cheese.

It was our first time and we loved it. We waited a bit for our food, but we had a big order and it was a little busy. The food was well worth the wait. We tried the chicken, catfish, ribs and all were very tasty. The sides were all delicious, too. My son enjoyed his birthday dinner and we’ll definitely be back again.

I have been patronizing Mom’s House since they were J’s Place and I have noticed recently that there’s always different and new employees. Yesterday was my most recent visit and the quality of the food has definitely went downhill. It’s obviously the cooks have changed also because the food consistency is gone. Kiara was our server and I have to give her kudos because she was very tentative and awesome. My recommendation is to train your staff rather than get rid of them to keep the quality of the food consistent or you’re going to lose faithful customers.

If you are in the mood for authentic souther style comfort food, this is the spot for you. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by one of the staff with a friendly smile and energetic enthusiasm. Once you are seated the server is punctual and attentive. The food comes out quickly and tastes great! You definitely have to try this spot.

I used to go to this restaurant when it was Jay’s place it was one of my favorite restaurants in town now it’s called mom’s house while not the same as jays but it isn’t much different it is still very good.
