Melba’s Place Menu – Brookhaven, MS

Type : Restaurant

Location : Brookhaven, MS

A few years back we opened The Shack next to a gas station on Hwy 550.
Some called it Crane’s, some the bus stop, but everyone who came knew they would most likely be greeted by (For 40+ years) none other than Melba. Many stopped for gas, a tan, or a bus ticket- but many stopped by just for a visit.
Not long after the shack was added, time came for Melba (My Mom) to retire and I move the restaurant into the old gas station. With 2 buildings, we have adjusted and learned along the way. The small little shack still sits next door, but it was time to give the old store a new face.
The main restaurant, Melba’s Place invites you to come on in, have a meal and perhaps share some of your stories about Melba. To know her is to love her.

Based on 94 reviews, the restaurant has received a rating of 4.2 stars. Price $$

Great food and plenty , best seafood in the area . Yes it’s pricey but was worth it . I haven’t had fried oysters in years bcoz many places don’t cook them good. But tonight I got the seafood platter that come with oysters, shrimp and catfish. The oysters were soo good I couldn’t stop eating them to even try the rest of the food . But it was all great , 12 oysters, 10 big shrimp and 2 catfish, hushpuppies and fries on the platter . Couldn’t eat it all , was so much food . I’ll definitely eat here again.

I spent almost every night that I was in town at this establishment. Great food, amazing staff, and reasonably priced. They also have a special menu or specials to keep it interesting.

We were visiting from out of town and found Melba’s on Google and read the reviews. We wanted to try to shrimp queso and it was really good as were the fried pickles. For entrees we have the blackened catfish po boy and the shrimp plate. We both were very pleased with our dishes. We were ready to pay and go back to the Air BnB, but the owner Mr. Calvin came by the table and spent some time with is and our 5 year old daughter. She absolutely loved getting to color on the table with Mr. Calvin. Our server was Destiny and she did a great job for us as well. We will definitely come back.

Amazing food My favorite’s are the steak bites( seasoned perfect and tender) the blackened catfish, the fresh salads with homemade ranch dressing and homemade chicken and dumplings. So many other items to choose from.

First visit – wait staff was very attentive and friendly. Food was “eh”. I had the seafood boil – shrimp, corn, red potatoes and smoked sausage. Where I live, we call this “low country boil”. I added a crab cluster. Sorry, but if you visit here, do not order this item. The shrimp were dry, the potatoes were overcooked, and the corn was chewy. Not worth the price especially after adding the cluster (which was fine). My friends had other items and blackened shrimp. Looked good, and they said it was. Next visit – wait staff ignored us, but I’m actually glad, because a roach decided to climb out of the napkin holder and dance across the table. Needless to say, we left right away. No one asked “may we help you” or even seemed to care why we suddenly vacated. Sorry, but I have to question the cleanliness here.

I wanted something different and tonight is the first time I’ve ever been to The Shack at 550. I ordered shrimp queso dip which was delicious and the tortilla chips are easily some of the best I’ve ever had. I also got a shrimp creole wrap. I didn’t like it as much. I’ve never had one before. It was alright for a wrap, but it had an herbaceous flavor that I didn’t care for. That may be normal for creole seasoning. I tried one of my son’s blackened shrimp. It was shockingly salty. He said it felt like getting punched. The staff was great. Quick pickup order I took home to eat in front of the TV.
