Super excellent food. I was questioning my selection of restaurants when I walked in, but the staff were friendly and the birra tacos I got were spectacular. I also really enjoied the fresh chips. Would totally go back again.

So glad that Abelardo’s opened a chain in Ames (located at where the Long John Silver’s used to be). I can finally get my fix of chorizo and egg burrito for breakfast without having to go all the way down to Des Moines. I have to admit though, the West Des Moines chain still have the best breakfast tacos, but who has the time to drive all the way to WDM on a Saturday morning… Having grown up in Southern California, I can attest to the quality of Abelardo’s carne asada fries (it’s called “super fries” on the menu). It tastes just like home, except I recommend subbing in the adobada for meat. Given that we’re in Iowa, Abelardo’s adobada (made from carne/pork) is to die for, and it goes well with anything on their menu (tacos, burritos, super fries/nachos). The other thing that I recommend is their avocado salsa. It’s like guacamole, except 10 times better (and spicy too!). The service is friendly, the drive-thru intercom works, and the decor… well, it’s typical Mexican fast food/grease grill. Beware of the slow wait time after ordering, they cook everything fresh after ordering.

More authentic Mexican food in more of a fast food environment. That’s the best of both worlds. Pouring the queso over the beans and the rice is heavenly.

My first experience with Abelardo’s is a “can’t wait to come back” winner! The picture menu in the drive through was very helpful and my food looked just like the picture. The tortillas were grilled and strong enough to hold the generous and delicious chicken fajita, which was spicy enough to get my attention but not overwhelming. Most refried beans are a mere afterthought, but not these. Mui bueno!!

Went with 3 friends for a first experience at Abelardo’s in Ames at 8pm last Thursday. Plenty of seating available, several cars thru drive-thru, ordered appetizer of Taquitos with cheese and guacamole to share, and the Diablo Burrito for myself. Everything brought to the table within an appropriate amount of time and was hot, fresh, appeared appetizing, and was DELICIOUS! Friendly, fast, and delicious. If you enjoy the heat like me, get the Diablo.

Fantastic authentic Mexican food! Massive burritos and tacos and a fun salsa bar! It’s a shame we couldn’t meet Abelardo himself.
